Inserting a logo or a product image into a slide presentation often ruins the design if the image has a harsh, solid background. While many people resort to complicated photo-editing software like Photoshop to fix this, you can actually remove image backgrounds in PowerPoint directly within the application.
Microsoft PowerPoint includes a powerful, built-in background removal tool that is perfect for isolating subjects and creating seamless, professional-looking slides.
How to Remove the Background from an Image
The background removal tool works best on images with high contrast between the subject and the background. Here is how to use it:
- Open your PowerPoint presentation and insert the image onto a slide.
- Click on the image to select it. This will reveal the Picture Format tab on the top ribbon.
- Click on the Picture Format tab.
- On the far left side of the ribbon, click the Remove Background button.
PowerPoint will automatically attempt to detect the background and cover it in a bright magenta overlay. Everything highlighted in magenta will be deleted, while everything in its original colour will remain.
Refining the Selection Manually
Because the automatic detection isn’t always perfect, PowerPoint provides you with manual adjustment tools. You will notice a new Background Removal tab has appeared on the ribbon.
Keeping Parts of the Image
If the software accidentally marked a part of your subject in magenta, you need to tell it to keep that area.
- Click Mark Areas to Keep on the ribbon.
- Your cursor will turn into a small drawing pencil.
- Click and drag a short line across the area you want to save. The magenta overlay will instantly disappear from that section.
Removing Stubborn Backgrounds
If some of the background is still visible in its original colour, you must mark it for deletion.
- Click Mark Areas to Remove on the ribbon.
- Draw a small line across the unwanted background section to turn it magenta.
Finalising Your Transparent Image
Once you are completely satisfied with the selection, click the Keep Changes button (the green checkmark) on the ribbon. The magenta areas will vanish, leaving you with a perfectly isolated subject with a transparent background.
