Standard cardiovascular exercise tracking on smartwatches traditionally focuses on basic open goals: tracking total elapsed time, active calories burned, or cumulative distance. However, for endurance runners, cyclists, and fitness enthusiasts training for marathons or building aerobic capacity, structured interval training (HIIT, tempo runs, and threshold repeats) requires precise workout phasing with target heart rate alerts and dedicated recovery intervals.
The native Workout app in watchOS allows users to build custom structured workouts directly on Apple Watch. By chaining custom warm-up phases, high-intensity work intervals, recovery steps, repeat loops, and target heart rate zones, Apple Watch delivers timely haptic and audio coaching cues, keeping your training on schedule without requiring third-party fitness subscriptions.
Creating a Custom Workout on Apple Watch
You can design a structured routine for Outdoor Run, Indoor Run, Outdoor Cycle, Indoor Cycle, and various cardio activities:
- Open the Workout app on your Apple Watch.
- Scroll to your chosen activity (for example, Outdoor Run).
- Tap the More (…) button located in the upper-right corner of the workout card.
- Scroll to the bottom of the list and tap Create Workout.
- Select Custom.
Configuring Warm-Up and Cool-Down Phases
Structured sessions typically begin with a preparatory warm-up and conclude with a gradual cool-down:
- Tap Warmup.
- Select the goal type: Time (e.g. 10 minutes), Distance (e.g. 1 kilometre), or Open (ends when you double-tap the screen).
- Optionally attach a target Heart Rate Zone (such as Zone 1 or Zone 2) to ensure warm-up pacing remains gentle.
- Tap Done.
Adding Work and Recovery Intervals
Next, define your active interval blocks:
- Tap Add, then select Work.
- Choose your interval trigger: set a target distance (e.g. 800 metres) or duration (e.g. 3 minutes).
- Set an active alert: select Pace or Heart Rate Zone (e.g. Zone 4 Threshold) to receive haptic warnings if you drop below or exceed your target.
- Tap Add again and select Recovery.
- Define your rest period (e.g. 90 seconds of low-intensity jogging or walking).
Configuring Repeat Loops and Set Counts
To avoid manually duplicating identical interval sets:
- Tap Add and choose Repeats.
- Select the Work and Recovery intervals you previously configured.
- Set the repetition counter (e.g. repeat 5 times).
- Tap Done. The workout overview calculates total expected duration and distance automatically.
Naming and Saving Your Custom Routine
To keep workouts organised:
- Tap Custom Title at the top of the creation screen.
- Dictate or scribble a descriptive name (such as 800m Track Repeats or Zone 2 Base Run).
- Tap Create Workout.
Your custom workout is saved permanently inside the activity menu. When you tap to begin, Apple Watch guides you through each interval using distinct haptic taps and audio cues on your connected AirPods, displaying dedicated interval countdown timers and real-time zone meters.
