How to Stop Windows 11 from Showing Microsoft Edge Tabs in Alt+Tab

In Windows 11, pressing the Alt + Tab keyboard shortcut opens the task switcher, allowing you to cycle rapidly through open applications. By default, however, Microsoft integrates Microsoft Edge browser tabs directly into this multitasking carousel. If you have twenty or thirty browser tabs open alongside your documents and applications, your Alt + Tab switcher quickly becomes overwhelmed with individual web pages, pushing critical desktop software off the screen.

Fortunately, Microsoft allows you to configure or completely disable this behaviour. Whether you want Alt + Tab to show only distinct application windows or limit browser tab clutter to a small number of recent sites, this guide walks you through adjusting the setting via Windows Settings, Group Policy, and the Windows Registry.

Why Does Windows 11 Show Edge Tabs in the App Switcher?

Microsoft designed this integration to blur the line between native desktop applications and progressive web apps (PWAs). While useful for users who juggle only three or four active tasks, power users frequently find it counterproductive:

  • Multitasking Overload: Navigating past dozens of open browser tabs wastes time when attempting to switch between Microsoft Word, Excel, and code editors.
  • Redundant Tab Management: Modern web browsers already provide robust built-in tab navigation via Ctrl + Tab and vertical tab bars, rendering system-level tab duplicates redundant.
  • Inconsistent App Switching: Other popular web browsers (such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Brave) do not insert individual tabs into Alt + Tab by default, leading to an inconsistent multitasking experience across different browsers.

Method 1: Turn Off Edge Tabs in Alt+Tab via Windows Settings (Recommended)

The simplest and cleanest way to restrict Alt + Tab to separate application windows is through the modern Settings application.

  1. Press Windows + I on your keyboard to open the Settings app.
  2. Ensure you are in the System category on the left navigation pane.
  3. Scroll down on the right pane and click on Multitasking.
  4. Locate the section labelled Alt + Tab (or “Show tabs from apps when snapping or pressing Alt+Tab”).
  5. Click the dropdown menu beside this option. By default, it may be set to “3 most recent tabs”, “5 most recent tabs”, or “20 most recent tabs”.
  6. Select Don’t show tabs from the dropdown list.

The change takes effect immediately without requiring a system restart. Press Alt + Tab now: your open Microsoft Edge browser will display as a single consolidated application window, no matter how many internal tabs you have running.

Method 2: Disable Edge Tab Integration via the Windows Registry

For system administrators managing local unmanaged machines, or users building custom installation scripts, you can enforce this setting via the Windows Registry:

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run dialogue box.
  2. Type regedit and press Enter to open the Registry Editor. Click Yes at the User Account Control (UAC) prompt.
  3. Navigate to the following key path in the address bar:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
  4. Look in the right pane for a 32-bit DWORD value named MultiTaskingAltTabFilter. If it does not exist, right-click an empty area in the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it MultiTaskingAltTabFilter.
  5. Double-click MultiTaskingAltTabFilter and set its Value data to 3:
    • 3 = Don’t show tabs (Windows only)
    • 2 = Open windows and 3 most recent tabs in Edge
    • 1 = Open windows and 5 most recent tabs in Edge
    • 0 = Open windows and 20 most recent tabs in Edge
  6. Click OK and close the Registry Editor.

Method 3: Configure Alt+Tab Behaviour Using Group Policy (Pro, Enterprise, and Education)

If you administer devices across an organisation using Active Directory or Local Group Policy Editor, you can standardise this multitasking policy across all client workstations:

  1. Press Windows + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
  2. In the left pane, navigate to:
User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Multitasking
  3. Double-click the policy titled Configure the inclusion of app tabs into Alt-Tab.
  4. Set the policy option to Enabled.
  5. Under the Options dropdown, choose Open windows only.
  6. Click Apply, followed by OK.
  7. Open a Command Prompt and run gpupdate /force to propagate the policy immediately.

Troubleshooting Alt+Tab Behaviour After Updates

In rare instances following major Windows 11 feature updates, Edge tab integration might revert to default behaviour. Keep these points in mind:

  • Feature Resets: Major cumulative builds occasionally restore recommended defaults. If Edge tabs reappear in your switcher, revisit Settings > System > Multitasking to reselect “Don’t show tabs”.
  • Multiple Edge Profiles: If you use multiple Microsoft Edge profiles (such as Work and Personal), each profile still renders as its own separate application window in the switcher, which is expected behaviour.
  • In-Browser Tab Switching: Disabling tabs in Alt + Tab does not hinder your ability to switch tabs quickly inside Edge. You can always use Ctrl + Tab to jump forward through open tabs or Ctrl + Shift + Tab to cycle backwards.

Configuring Alt + Tab to ignore browser tabs restores clarity and speed to your desktop workflow, enabling predictable, instantaneous switching between full applications on Windows 11.
