While typing on an iPad, you may suddenly find that your full-width on-screen keyboard has shrunk into a miniature, smartphone-sized window hovering over your content. This compact view is iPadOS’s “floating keyboard” feature, designed for one-handed thumb typing and QuickPath swipe gestures. However, if triggered accidentally by an inadvertent pinch gesture, it can be disorienting and disrupt your typical two-handed typing flow.
Fortunately, restoring the standard full-size docked keyboard on iPadOS requires only a quick gesture or tap. In this guide, we cover how to turn off the floating keyboard on your iPad, make it full size again, dock it securely at the bottom of the screen, and prevent accidental triggering.
In This Guide
Method 1: Two-Finger Pinch-to-Spread Gesture
The fastest and most natural way to expand the floating keyboard back to full width is by reversing the pinch gesture that created it:
- Open any app where the keyboard is visible (such as Notes, Safari, or Mail).
- Place two fingers (such as your thumb and index finger) anywhere on the floating keyboard.
- Spread your two fingers outward away from each other in a reverse-pinch motion, exactly as if you were zooming in on a photo.
- The miniature keyboard will instantly expand and dock itself along the bottom of the display.
If the gesture does not register on the first try, ensure your fingers begin firmly within the boundary of the keyboard frame before spreading outward.
Method 2: Dragging the Keyboard to the Bottom Screen Edge
If you find multi-touch gestures fiddly, iPadOS provides a reliable one-finger method using the grabber handle:
- Locate the small grey horizontal bar (the grabber handle) at the very bottom edge of the floating keyboard.
- Tap and hold this grabber bar with one finger.
- Drag the keyboard straight down toward the bottom-centre edge of your iPad display.
- As the floating window reaches the lower margin, release your finger.
- The keyboard will automatically snap into its full-width, anchored layout.
Docking and Merging a Split Keyboard
On select iPad models with Home buttons or older iPadOS versions, you may encounter a “split keyboard” rather than a floating one. A split keyboard divides the keys into two separate clusters on the left and right sides of the screen:
- Tap any text field to display the split keyboard.
- Look for the small keyboard icon in the lower-right corner of the keys.
- Tap and hold the keyboard icon until a pop-up menu appears.
- Slide your finger to Dock and Merge and release.
- Alternatively, place one thumb on each half of the keyboard and drag them horizontally toward the centre of the screen until they join back together.
When and Why to Use the Floating Keyboard
While an accidental floating keyboard can be irritating, knowing when to activate it intentionally can enhance your iPad productivity:
- QuickPath Swipe Typing: The floating keyboard enables continuous swipe typing (QuickPath). Instead of tapping individual keys, you can glide your finger across the letters to form words quickly.
- Unobstructed Screen Real Estate: In drawing and design apps such as Procreate or Freeform, a full-size keyboard conceals more than a third of the canvas. Shrinking the keyboard leaves your workspace visible while you name layers or type labels.
- One-Handed Operation: If you are standing or holding your iPad with one hand, dragging the floating keyboard to the left or right margin allows convenient thumb-based typing.
- Repositioning: You can drag the bottom grabber bar to move the floating keyboard anywhere on the screen, keeping active form fields or chat bubbles visible.
To intentionally shrink the keyboard at any time, simply place two fingers on the full-sized keyboard and pinch inward.
Troubleshooting iPad Keyboard Sizing Issues
If your iPad keyboard remains unresponsive or refuses to expand, review these troubleshooting steps:
- Restart the Active Application: Occasionally, third-party apps fail to register iPadOS layout updates properly. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to the centre to access the App Switcher, swipe up on the app card to close it, and relaunch the app.
- Detach Physical Keyboards: If you have an Apple Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard Folio, or third-party Bluetooth keyboard connected, iPadOS may suppress or misalign on-screen keyboard controls. Disconnect the Bluetooth device or temporarily unclamp the iPad from the keyboard dock.
- Restart iPadOS: If system gesture recognition hangs, restart your iPad via Settings > General > Shut Down, wait 30 seconds, and turn the device back on.
