The native Google Gboard keyboard on Android includes an integrated clipboard manager that stores recently copied text, links, addresses, and images. However, to conserve memory and protect privacy, Gboard automatically purges unpinned clipboard items after 60 minutes. If you regularly copy and paste recurring email templates, physical addresses, bank account numbers, or code snippets, you can pin essential clips permanently. Pinned items remain saved on your device indefinitely until you choose to delete them.
Enabling the Clipboard in Gboard
If you have not previously accessed Gboard’s clipboard manager, you must first ensure clipboard history logging is activated.
- Tap inside any text input field (such as a messaging app, browser address bar, or notes app) to bring up the Gboard keyboard.
- Look at the top toolbar directly above the letter keys. Tap the Clipboard icon (which looks like an office clipboard). If the icon is hidden, tap the four-square menu icon on the far left of the toolbar to locate and drag it into your primary toolbar.
- If prompted with “Put Gboard clipboard to work”, tap the toggle switch to turn Clipboard history On.
From this point onward, any text or image copied to your Android clipboard will automatically register inside Gboard’s clipboard viewer.
Pinning Items for Permanent Quick Access
Pinning guarantees that your most useful text snippets are never wiped by the automated one-hour expiration timer or device restarts:
- Open Gboard and tap the Clipboard icon in the suggestion strip.
- Locate the copied text or screenshot you wish to preserve in the Recent section.
- Touch and hold (long-press) the specific clipboard card.
- A contextual menu will appear with three options: Paste, Pin, and Delete.
- Tap Pin (represented by a pushpin icon).
The selected item will immediately move out of the temporary Recent section into a dedicated Pinned category at the top of the clipboard panel. Pinned items remain fixed in place, allowing you to insert them into any document or chat with a single tap.
Adding Custom Clipboard Snippets Manually
In addition to pinning recently copied text, Gboard allows you to create brand-new clipboard snippets directly without copying them from another app:
- Open the Gboard clipboard panel.
- Tap the Pencil icon (Edit) in the top-right corner of the clipboard header.
- Tap the + (Add new item) button.
- Type or paste your text (for instance, a standard customer support disclaimer or your Wi-Fi guest password).
- Tap Save. The snippet is immediately stored directly inside your Pinned list.
Managing and Deleting Pinned Clips
To keep your clipboard organized and remove outdated information:
- Unpin a Clip: Long-press a pinned item and tap Unpin. The item will drop back into the Recent section and expire after its standard timer concludes.
- Delete Clips Individually: Long-press any clip and tap Delete to immediately erase it from local storage.
- Batch Management: Tap the Pencil icon in the top-right corner of the clipboard view. Check the circular boxes next to multiple clips, then tap the Trash can icon to remove them simultaneously.
Privacy and Screenshot Considerations
Gboard also offers an optional setting to save recent screenshots directly to the clipboard toolbar:
- In Gboard Settings (tap the gear icon on the keyboard toolbar), navigate to Clipboard.
- Toggle Save recent screenshots in clipboard on or off based on your privacy preferences.
- When enabled, newly captured screenshots appear as instant paste suggestions for rapid sharing in messaging threads.
