By default, Gmail displays 50 email conversations per page in your inbox. When managing high volumes of incoming correspondence, reviewing newsletters, or triaging customer enquiries, navigating through dozens of separate pages can significantly slow down your workflow. Google Workspace and personal Gmail accounts allow users to double this density by expanding the inbox view to show up to 100 conversations per page.
Adjusting the Maximum Page Size in Gmail Settings
Changing your page density does not require any third-party browser extensions or scripts. The setting is built directly into Gmail’s web interface and applies across all inbox tabs, including Primary, Promotions, Social, Updates, and custom search filters.
- Open your preferred web browser and navigate to Gmail.
- Click the Settings gear icon located in the top-right corner of the interface.
- In the Quick Settings sidebar that appears, click See all settings at the very top.
- Ensure you are on the General tab along the top navigation bar.
- Locate the Maximum page size row near the top of the settings list.
- Next to Show [number] conversations per page, click the dropdown menu and select 100 (options include 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, and 100).
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click Save Changes.
Gmail will automatically reload your inbox. Once refreshed, each page will now display up to 100 conversations simultaneously, dramatically reducing the number of times you need to click the pagination arrows to browse historical messages.
Configuring Contacts Page Size
Directly beneath the conversation page size setting, Gmail also includes a corresponding option for contacts:
- Show contacts per page: You can configure this setting to display 50, 100, or 250 contacts per page when managing address books in Google Contacts integration views.
- Selecting a larger number streamlines bulk contact edits, label assignments, and deduplication sweeps.
Performance Considerations on Slower Connections
While increasing the page size to 100 conversations saves time during inbox reviews, there are a few practical trade-offs to keep in mind:
- Initial Load Time: Rendering 100 email rows requires your browser to process twice as many DOM elements and fetch additional thread snippets. On modern computers and broadband connections, the difference is negligible (a fraction of a second), but on older laptops or metered mobile hotspots, opening the inbox may feel slightly less responsive.
- Bulk Selection Workflows: One of the biggest advantages of displaying 100 items per page is bulk management. When you click the master checkbox at the top-left of the message list, selecting all visible messages instantly selects 100 threads instead of 50, allowing you to archive, label, or delete large batches twice as fast.
Troubleshooting Page Size Changes
If your inbox continues displaying 50 conversations after saving your preferences, review these troubleshooting steps:
- Verify Save Changes Was Clicked: If you navigate away from the Settings screen by clicking the Gmail logo or an inbox category before clicking Save Changes at the bottom of the General tab, your updates will be discarded.
- Multiple Inboxes and Priority Inbox: If you use the Multiple Inboxes or Priority Inbox layout (configured under Settings > Inbox), individual section limits may override the general page size. Multiple Inboxes sections have their own conversation count limits (typically 5, 10, or 20 per panel) configured in Settings > Multiple Inboxes.
- Browser Cache and Zoom: Occasionally, aggressive browser caching can preserve an older view. Perform a hard refresh using
Ctrl + F5(Windows/Linux) orCmd + Shift + R(macOS) to reload the fresh settings payload from Google’s servers.
