Jotting down quick notes, diagrams, or meeting minutes with your finger or a stylus in Apple Notes provides the spontaneity of pen and paper. However, handwritten scribbles are difficult to share formally, cannot be searched or indexed easily, and cannot be pasted into emails or documents without manual transcription.
iOS incorporates advanced neural text recognition directly into the Apple Notes app. Powered by on-device machine learning, your iPhone can parse handwritten cursive and print, select ink strokes like standard characters, and convert your handwritten text directly into formatted, editable digital type with a couple of taps.
Selecting and Converting Handwriting in Apple Notes
You can convert handwritten words into typed text directly within the note canvas.
- Launch the Notes app on your iPhone and open the note containing your handwritten ink.
- Make sure you are not in active drawing mode (if the markup pen palette is visible at the bottom, tap the Done button in the top-right corner).
- Double-tap a handwritten word with your finger to select it. iOS highlights the word with an ink selection outline and yellow selection handles.
- Drag the circular selection grab handles to extend the selection across entire sentences, bulleted lists, or whole paragraphs of handwritten text.
- In the contextual popup menu that appears above the selected ink, tap the right arrow
>to reveal additional actions. - Tap Copy as Text. iOS parses the vector strokes into digital Unicode text and stores it on your clipboard.
- Tap an empty area of the note (or open Mail, Messages, or Pages), tap the cursor, and select Paste. Your handwritten script appears instantly as clean, editable typed text.
Inserting Text Directly with the Selection Tool
If you prefer converting handwriting into a new text block directly inline without leaving drawing mode:
- Tap the Markup pen icon at the bottom of the screen to reveal the drawing tool palette.
- Tap the Lasso Selection Tool (the tool situated between the eraser and the ruler).
- Draw a boundary loop around the handwritten text you wish to convert.
- Tap inside the selected boundary.
- In the contextual menu, tap Insert Space or tap Copy as Text to duplicate the transcribed text directly above or below your original drawing.
Searching Through Handwritten Notes in iOS
You do not need to convert your handwriting into typed text simply to find specific notes. Apple Notes automatically runs background Optical Character Recognition (OCR) on all ink strokes:
- Open the Notes app and pull down to reveal the primary Search bar at the top of your folders list.
- Type a keyword that you wrote by hand in one of your notes.
- Apple Notes instantly identifies and highlights the note in the search results, displaying a yellow highlight over the exact handwritten word inside the document.
Improving Handwriting Recognition Accuracy
- System Language consistency: Ensure your system language settings match the language you are writing in. Navigate to Settings > General > Language & Region to verify keyboard and input dictionaries.
- Spacing between lines: Leaving a small gap between handwritten lines prevents descending letters (like g, j, or y) from colliding with capitals on the line below, significantly improving OCR accuracy.
- Punctuation recognition: Writing full stops, commas, and question marks distinctly ensures the transcribed text preserves natural sentence breaks when pasted into word processors.
