Working across multiple enterprise projects in Microsoft Teams often leads to an overwhelming flood of pop-up banners, audio chimes, and red activity badges. While global Teams notifications apply system-wide, individual channels frequently require different levels of attention. High-priority project channels may require instant banner alerts, while general discussion channels are better kept quiet. Customising channel-specific notifications allows you to filter noise and stay focused on relevant tasks.
Understanding Channel Notification Levels
Microsoft Teams provides granular control over how activity within a specific channel reaches your screen:
- Banner and Feed: Displays a desktop pop-up banner in the lower-right corner of your screen (or native OS notification centre) and adds an unread badge to your Teams Activity feed.
- Only Show in Feed: Silently logs the post or mention in your Activity feed without displaying disruptive desktop pop-up banners or playing sound effects.
- Off: Disables all notifications for general channel posts. You will only be alerted if you are personally @mentioned by name.
- Include Replies: Allows you to decide whether you want alerts for every subsequent reply in a conversation thread or solely for newly created top-level posts.
Configuring Notifications for a Specific Channel on Desktop and Web
Follow these steps to customize alert preferences for any channel in the new Microsoft Teams client:
- Launch Microsoft Teams on Windows, macOS, or your web browser.
- Click on Teams in the primary left-hand navigation rail.
- Locate the team and find the specific channel you wish to configure.
- Hover your mouse over the channel name, click the three dots (More options) icon next to it, and select Channel notifications.
- In the pop-up menu, select from the primary preset options or click Custom for complete control:
- All new posts: Choose Banner and feed, Only show in feed, or Off. Check or uncheck Include all replies according to your preference.
- Channel mentions: Configure how you are notified when a colleague uses
@channelor@teamto broadcast messages to all members.
- Click Save to apply your custom settings immediately.
Managing Channel Notifications in the Teams Mobile App
If you also access Microsoft Teams on an iPhone, iPad, or Android device, you can adjust channel alerts independently to protect your mobile battery and off-hours focus:
- Open the Teams app on your mobile device.
- Tap the Teams tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap the channel you want to adjust to open its message stream.
- Tap the Bell icon situated in the upper-right corner of the channel header.
- Select from the available mobile delivery options:
- All new messages in this channel: Receive mobile push notifications for every post and reply.
- Replies to my messages only: Alerts you exclusively when teammates reply directly to threads you initiated or contributed to.
- Turn off: Silences all mobile push alerts for this channel while keeping the channel available for manual review.
Muting Active Conversation Threads
If a specific discussion thread within an otherwise important channel becomes excessively active or irrelevant to your responsibilities, you can mute that individual conversation without altering your channel-wide settings. Click the three dots in the top-right corner of the initial post and choose Turn off notifications. You will no longer receive alerts for new replies on that single thread.
