How to Add and Customise Folder Stacks in the macOS Dock

The macOS Dock serves primarily as an application launcher on the left or top section, but the area to the right of the vertical divider line (or below the horizontal divider) offers advanced folder management capabilities known as Stacks. By pinning frequently accessed directories—such as Downloads, Documents, active project folders, or external drives—to this section of the Dock, you can preview, open, and drag files directly without cluttering your desktop or launching a dedicated Finder window.

How to Add a Folder to the macOS Dock

Creating a new Stack in the Dock requires a simple drag-and-drop gesture from Finder:

  1. Open a Finder window on your Mac.
  2. Navigate to the folder you wish to place in the Dock (for example, a project folder, your Documents folder, or an iCloud Drive directory).
  3. Click and drag the folder towards the Dock.
  4. Hover the folder over the right-hand section of the Dock—specifically between the thin vertical divider line and the Trash icon.
  5. When adjacent icons slide apart to make space, release the mouse button to drop the folder into place.

Customising Stack Display and View Modes

Once a folder resides in the Dock, right-clicking (or holding the Control key and clicking) on its icon opens a menu packed with layout and viewing preferences:

Display As: Folder vs Stack

  • Folder: Displays the standard macOS blue folder glyph (or custom icon). This maintains a tidy, static visual appearance in the Dock.
  • Stack: Renders a dynamic miniature stack showing the actual thumbnail of the most recent file inside the folder. As files are added or modified, the top preview icon updates automatically.

View Content As: Selecting the Opening Style

Selecting how the contents expand when clicked dramatically impacts accessibility:

  • Fan: Best for folders containing a modest number of items (under ten). Items spring upwards in a graceful curving arc with high-resolution thumbnail previews.
  • Grid: Ideal for folders with dozens of files. Expands into a neat matrix of tiles with icons and titles. If the folder contains more items than fit on screen, the grid becomes scrollable.
  • List: Displays files in a compact vertical hierarchy. This mode supports cascading sub-menus, allowing you to traverse nested sub-folders directly from the Dock.
  • Automatic: Allows macOS to dynamically select between Fan and Grid based on the current item count inside the directory.

Configuring Sort Order

Within the same right-click menu, you can determine how files are arranged inside the Stack:

  • Date Added: Places newly downloaded or saved files at the top, making it ideal for the Downloads directory.
  • Date Modified: Prioritises recently edited documents.
  • Name: Arranges files alphabetically from A to Z.
  • Kind: Groups similar file formats together (e.g., images, PDFs, archives).

Removing or Rearranging Stacks

To reposition a Stack, drag it along the right side of the Dock divider until it reaches your desired position. To remove a Stack entirely, drag it upwards into the empty Desktop area until a small Remove badge appears, then release it. Removing a Stack from the Dock leaves the original folder and its files completely safe and untouched on your Mac’s storage.
