How to Pin Important Channels to the Top in Microsoft Teams

As enterprise organisations expand their Microsoft Teams environment, users often find themselves added to dozens of departmental teams, cross-functional squads, and legacy project workspaces. Scrolling through a long hierarchical list of team folders to check announcements or reply to daily work threads wastes time. In Microsoft Teams, you can pin essential channels directly to the very top of your Teams sidebar, creating a dedicated, flat priority tray that bypasses deep folder navigation entirely.

Pinning an Active Channel to the Top Tray

Pinning a channel elevates it to a special “Pinned” section situated immediately above your general Teams list.

  1. Launch Microsoft Teams on your desktop or web browser.
  2. Select the Teams icon on the primary app bar on the far left.
  3. In the Teams list, expand the parent team containing the channel you want to elevate.
  4. Hover your mouse cursor over the specific channel name (for example, #Daily-Updates or #Engineering-Alerts).
  5. Click the More options button (the three horizontal dots …) that appears on the right edge of the channel name.
  6. From the drop-down menu, select Pin (represented by a pushpin icon).

The channel will immediately duplicate into a dedicated Pinned container at the very top of your sidebar. The channel retains its original position inside the parent team while staying permanently accessible above all other listings.

Reordering and Customising Pinned Channels

You can pin up to twenty-five channels simultaneously. To keep your daily workflow organised, you can structure your pinned channels in order of operational priority:

  • Drag-and-Drop Reordering: Click and hold any pinned channel name, then drag it up or down within the Pinned group to arrange channels in your preferred priority order.
  • Channel Hierarchy Clarity: In the Pinned section, Teams displays both the parent team name and the channel name (e.g. Marketing > General), ensuring you always know the organizational context of every pinned thread.
  • Unread Activity Badges: Pinned channels retain full notification fidelity. Whenever an unread message, @mention, or announcement arrives, the pinned entry turns bold with an alert badge count.

Unpinning Channels When Projects Conclude

When a temporary task force wraps up or a project reaches completion, you can remove the channel from your pinned tray without leaving the team or deleting any messages:

  1. Locate the channel inside the Pinned section at the top of your sidebar.
  2. Click the More options button (…) beside the pinned channel.
  3. Select Unpin.

The channel cleanly vanishes from the top tray while remaining completely intact within its original team structure below.
