How to Keep Screen Awake While Charging on Android Using Developer Options

Whether you use your Android device as a bedside alarm clock, a smart home control dashboard, a real-time system monitoring panel, or an active test device for mobile application development, having the display automatically sleep after 30 seconds or a couple of minutes can be intensely frustrating. While standard Android display settings allow you to extend the screen timeout up to 10 or 30 minutes, they do not offer an option to prevent sleep entirely.

Fortunately, Android includes a dedicated Stay Awake toggle hidden inside Developer Options. When activated, this feature keeps your screen illuminated and active whenever your device is connected to a USB charger or wireless charging pad, while maintaining normal screen timeout behaviour when running on battery power. In this guide, you will learn how to unlock Developer Options, enable Stay Awake, and protect your OLED display from burn-in.

Why Keep Your Android Display Awake While Charging?

Preventing automatic screen sleep during charging offers several practical use cases:

  • Continuous dashboard monitoring: Keep weather radar, smart home security cameras, or stock tickers visible throughout your workday.
  • Application development and debugging: Prevent your device from locking and disrupting active ADB (Android Debug Bridge) sessions, logcat streaming, or UI testing.
  • Navigation and audio streaming: Ensure map directions, workout timers, or podcast playlists remain readily accessible on vehicle charging docks.

Step 1: Enable Developer Options on Android

Because the Stay Awake toggle is an advanced system setting, you must first unlock Developer Options:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android smartphone or tablet.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom and tap About phone (or About tablet).
  3. Locate the entry labelled Build number. On Samsung Galaxy devices, you may first need to tap Software information to find Build number.
  4. Tap Build number rapidly seven times in succession.
  5. When prompted, enter your device PIN, pattern, or fingerprint to confirm.
  6. A toast notification will appear on screen stating: “You are now a developer!”.

Step 2: Turn On the “Stay Awake” Setting

With Developer Options enabled, activate the permanent display toggle:

  1. Return to the main Settings menu.
  2. Tap System (or scroll to the bottom of the main Settings screen on Samsung devices) and select Developer options.
  3. Locate the setting named Stay awake (described as “Screen will never sleep while charging”).
  4. Toggle the switch next to Stay awake to the On position (blue/green).

From this moment on, whenever your Android device is plugged into a wall charger, USB port, or wireless charging stand, the display will remain powered on until you manually press the physical Power button.

Preventing Screen Burn-in on AMOLED Displays

Modern Android smartphones feature vibrant OLED and AMOLED displays. Leaving static images on an illuminated screen for prolonged periods can cause permanent ghosting or pixel wear. To safeguard your display while using Stay Awake:

  • Lower Display Brightness: Reduce brightness manually or enable adaptive brightness so the screen produces minimal heat while docked.
  • Use Dynamic Screensavers: In Settings > Display > Screen saver, configure a moving clock, colour cycle, or Google Photos album that periodically shifts pixels.
  • Enable Dark Theme: Running dark interfaces turns off black OLED pixels entirely, keeping internal temperatures cool.
