How to Transfer or Convert a Physical SIM to an eSIM on iPhone

Apple has made eSIM the standard connectivity method for iPhone, with the iPhone 14 and later models in the United States shipping without a physical SIM tray entirely. Even in regions where a physical SIM slot remains available, transferring your existing physical SIM to an eSIM consolidates your mobile connectivity, frees the SIM tray for a second line, and eliminates the risk of losing a tiny plastic card during travel.

What an eSIM Is and Why You Should Consider Converting

An eSIM (embedded Subscriber Identity Module) is a digital SIM profile stored directly on a chip soldered inside your iPhone. Unlike a physical nano-SIM card that you insert and remove, an eSIM is activated and managed entirely through software.

Practical benefits of converting to eSIM:

  • Dual SIM capability: Use your eSIM as your primary line and keep the physical SIM slot available for a secondary number, travel SIM, or business line.
  • No physical card to lose: eSIMs cannot fall out of your phone, get damaged by moisture, or be misplaced during international trips.
  • Faster carrier switching: When travelling abroad, you can add a local eSIM plan within minutes without visiting a shop to buy a physical SIM.
  • Multiple eSIM profiles: iPhone 13 and later models support storing multiple eSIM profiles simultaneously (up to eight stored profiles, with two active at once on most models).

Compatibility Requirements

Before converting, verify these requirements:

  • iPhone model: eSIM is supported on iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and all later models. iPhone 14 (US models) and later are eSIM-only.
  • iOS version: Update to the latest iOS version for the best eSIM management experience. iOS 16 and later include the eSIM transfer workflow.
  • Carrier support: Your mobile carrier must support eSIM. Most major carriers globally now offer eSIM, including EE, Vodafone, Three, O2, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Contact your carrier if you are unsure.
  • Account status: Your account must be active and in good standing. Prepaid accounts may have limited eSIM support depending on the carrier.

Method 1: Convert Physical SIM to eSIM on the Same iPhone

If your carrier supports SIM-to-eSIM conversion, iOS provides a built-in workflow that converts your physical SIM without needing to contact your carrier:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Mobile Data (or Cellular in some regions).
  3. If your carrier supports the conversion, you will see an option labelled Convert to eSIM or Set Up eSIM under your current plan.
  4. Tap Convert to eSIM.
  5. Tap Convert Mobile Plan to confirm.
  6. Wait for the activation to complete. This typically takes a few minutes.
  7. Once the eSIM is active, your physical SIM is automatically deactivated.
  8. You can remove the physical SIM card from the tray. It is no longer needed.

Not all carriers support this direct conversion method. If the option does not appear, use Method 2 or contact your carrier.

Method 2: Request an eSIM From Your Carrier

If the built-in conversion option is unavailable, your carrier can provision an eSIM for you:

  1. Contact your carrier via their app, website, or customer service line.
  2. Request an eSIM activation or SIM swap from physical SIM to eSIM.
  3. The carrier will either:
    • Provide a QR code (via email or displayed in their app) to scan on your iPhone.
    • Send an eSIM activation link that opens directly on your iPhone.
    • Provide manual activation details (SM-DP+ address and activation code).
  4. On your iPhone, go to Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM (or Add Mobile Plan).
  5. Choose Use QR Code and scan the code provided by your carrier, or select Enter Details Manually to type the SM-DP+ address and activation code.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete activation.
  7. Once the eSIM activates, your physical SIM is deactivated by the carrier.

Method 3: Transfer eSIM When Setting Up a New iPhone

When migrating to a new iPhone, iOS offers to transfer your eSIM (or convert your physical SIM) during the initial setup process:

  1. Turn on your new iPhone and begin the setup process.
  2. When prompted to Set Up Mobile Data, your iPhone detects any transferable SIM profiles from your previous device (if it is nearby and connected to the same Wi-Fi network).
  3. Select the phone number you want to transfer.
  4. If transferring from a physical SIM on your old phone to an eSIM on the new phone, tap Convert to eSIM.
  5. Complete verification (your carrier may send a confirmation SMS to your old device).
  6. The eSIM activates on your new iPhone, and the old SIM is deactivated.

This process requires both iPhones to be running iOS 16 or later and connected to Wi-Fi. eSIM Quick Transfer uses Bluetooth to communicate between devices, so keep them close together.

Managing Multiple eSIM Profiles

After converting to eSIM, you can manage your profiles in Settings → Mobile Data:

  • Default Line: Choose which line is used for outgoing calls, messages, and data by default.
  • Per-Contact Assignment: Assign specific contacts to use a particular line when calling or messaging.
  • Mobile Data Switching: Enable Allow Mobile Data Switching to let your iPhone use the secondary line for data when the primary line has no signal.
  • Rename Lines: Tap a plan and select Mobile Plan Label to rename lines as “Personal,” “Work,” or any custom label.

Troubleshooting eSIM Conversion Problems

“Convert to eSIM” Option Not Available

This usually means your carrier has not enabled the direct conversion feature for your account type. Contact your carrier to request eSIM provisioning manually, or check whether you need a specific account tier or contract update.

eSIM Activation Fails

  • Ensure you have a stable Wi-Fi connection during activation.
  • Restart your iPhone and try again.
  • Verify that the QR code or activation details have not expired. Carrier-issued QR codes sometimes have a limited validity window.
  • Check that your iPhone is not carrier-locked to a different provider.

Calls or Data Not Working After Conversion

  • Go to Settings → Mobile Data and ensure the eSIM line is selected as the active plan.
  • Toggle Aeroplane Mode on and off to force a network reconnection.
  • Reset network settings: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
  • Contact your carrier if the issue persists, as eSIM provisioning may require backend activation on their end.

Transferring eSIM to a Replacement or Repaired iPhone

If you need to move your eSIM to a replacement device (e.g., after a repair or warranty swap), the process is the same as Method 3. If eSIM Quick Transfer does not work, contact your carrier to reissue the eSIM profile for the new device.

Converting from a physical SIM to an eSIM is a one-time process that simplifies your mobile connectivity, improves device flexibility, and prepares you for the fully eSIM-based future of iPhone connectivity.
