How to Manage Dual SIM and Set Default Calling and Mobile Data Preferences on Android

Modern Android smartphones frequently support Dual SIM functionality through two physical nano-SIM trays, a combination of one physical SIM and an eSIM, or dual active eSIM profiles. Operating dual lines allows users to cleanly segregate work and personal communications, take advantage of international roaming data packages whilst retaining domestic numbers, or combine high-allowance data plans with cost-effective voice subscriptions. Configuring which SIM handles cellular data, telephone calls, and SMS messaging ensures predictable mobile billing and seamless network performance.

Understanding Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS)

Most modern smartphones operate under Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) technology. Under DSDS, both SIM profiles remain actively registered to cellular base stations simultaneously to receive incoming calls and SMS alerts. However, because most handsets share a single radio transceiver, engaging in an active voice call on SIM 1 may temporarily suspend mobile data or incoming alerts on SIM 2 unless your device supports advanced VoLTE data switching or Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA) hardware.

Accessing the SIMs Management Menu on Android

While manufacturer skins like Samsung One UI, Xiaomi HyperOS, and stock Android on Google Pixel display slight terminology variations, the underlying settings reside within the Network settings hierarchy:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android handset.
  2. Tap on Network & internet (or Connections on Samsung Galaxy devices).
  3. Select SIMs (or SIM manager).
  4. You will see both active SIM cards labelled as SIM 1 and SIM 2, alongside their detected mobile network operators.

Renaming SIM Cards and Setting Colour Accents

To avoid confusing personal and commercial numbers during outbound operations, customise their visual labels:

  1. In the SIMs menu, tap on the specific SIM you wish to edit.
  2. Tap the Pencil (Edit) icon or SIM name field.
  3. Assign an intuitive title such as Personal, Work, or Travel eSIM.
  4. Assign a distinct theme colour or icon. This visual tag highlights the active network icon in your quick settings tray and dialler screen.

Configuring Default Preferences for Data, Calls, and SMS

Inside the SIM manager menu, Android provides dedicated preference controls for primary communication channels:

1. Mobile Data Preference

Tap Mobile data and select which network operator supplies cellular internet connectivity. Android routes all background app sync, browser requests, and streaming traffic through this selected provider.

Tip: Enable Automatic data switching (or Backup calling data). If your primary data SIM enters an area with zero cellular reception, your phone will temporarily route data through the secondary SIM to prevent service blackouts.

2. Default Calling SIM

Select Calls or Preferred SIM for calls. You can choose one of three operational behaviours:

  • Assign Primary SIM: Automatically routes all outgoing phone calls through a chosen line without prompting.
  • Ask every time: Displays a pop-up confirmation dialler each time you initiate a call, allowing you to choose between SIM 1 and SIM 2 manually.

3. Default SMS and Text Messages

Tap SMS messages to designate your preferred carrier for outgoing text messages. Within Google Messages, you can override this globally assigned preference per individual conversation by tapping the SIM toggle icon directly inside the text input field.

Managing Roaming and Preferred Network Types per SIM

If one SIM is reserved for foreign travel or rural coverage, you can independently configure its radio frequency generation and data roaming permissions:

  1. Tap on the individual SIM card under the SIMs list.
  2. Toggle Roaming on or off depending on your operator roaming agreements to prevent unintended tariff charges abroad.
  3. Tap Preferred network type to specify whether the profile should search for 5G (recommended), LTE/4G, or 3G/2G bands. Restricting an auxiliary SMS SIM to 4G/LTE often saves battery life by disabling unnecessary dual-5G modem polling.

Temporarily Disabling a SIM Line

When going on holiday or after completing your work shift, you can switch off an individual SIM profile without ejecting the physical card or deleting an eSIM:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
  2. Select the target SIM (e.g. Work).
  3. Toggle the master switch labelled Use SIM to the Off position.

The Android operating system immediately disconnects the transceiver from the carrier network, ensuring no calls, messages, or background data ping the inactive number until you re-enable it.
