How to Link Your iPhone to Windows 11 Using Phone Link for Calls and Messages

For years, cross-device integration between an iPhone and a Windows PC required third-party utilities or browser-based workarounds. With recent updates to Microsoft’s Phone Link application in Windows 11, Apple users can now pair their iOS devices directly with their computers over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). This native integration allows you to receive incoming notifications, send and receive one-on-one iMessage and SMS conversations, and place cellular phone calls directly through your PC microphone and speakers without picking up your handheld device.

Requirements and Technical Limitations

Before initiating pairing, verify that your hardware and software meet the minimum criteria established by Microsoft and Apple:

  • Operating System: Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer with current feature updates installed.
  • iOS Version: An iPhone running iOS 14.0 or higher (iOS 17 or iOS 18 recommended for stability).
  • Connectivity: Both your Windows 11 PC and iPhone must have functional Bluetooth adapters enabled. Cellular or Wi-Fi data must be active on the iPhone.
  • Software: The Phone Link application on Windows and the Link to Windows companion app downloaded from the Apple App Store.

Because Apple restricts proprietary iOS frameworks, certain features differ from Android pairing: group iMessage threads, image attachments, and media file transfers are not natively relayed via Phone Link. Messages received while the PC is disconnected will not retroactively sync to the desktop client.

Step 1: Prepare the Phone Link App on Windows 11

Launch the built-in Phone Link application on your Windows 11 desktop or laptop:

  1. Open the Start Menu, type Phone Link, and select the application.
  2. On the welcoming screen, choose iPhone as your device type.
  3. A unique QR code and pairing session identifier will appear on your desktop monitor. Keep this window open.

Step 2: Install and Pair via Link to Windows on iOS

On your iPhone, follow these steps to establish the initial handshake:

  1. Open the App Store, search for Link to Windows (developed by Microsoft Corporation), and tap Get to install it.
  2. Launch the app and grant the requested Bluetooth permissions when prompted.
  3. Tap Scan QR Code and point your iPhone camera at the QR code displayed on your PC screen.
  4. Confirm the pairing request on both screens by verifying that the six-digit numerical code matches. Tap Pair on your iPhone and Pair in Windows 11.

Step 3: Grant Essential iOS Bluetooth Permissions

To enable notification forwarding and message synchronisation, Apple requires explicit permission within the native iOS Bluetooth settings:

  1. On your iPhone, navigate to Settings > Bluetooth.
  2. Locate your Windows 11 computer name under the My Devices section and tap the small Info (i) icon next to it.
  3. Toggle on the following three settings:
    • Show Notifications: Allows Windows 11 to display banner alerts for incoming apps and calls.
    • Sync Contacts: Relays address book names to incoming call screens.
    • Share System Notifications: Forwards iMessage and SMS payloads over the encrypted Bluetooth channel.

After adjusting these toggles, return to the Phone Link desktop window and click Continue to finalise the handoff.

Placing Calls and Replying to Messages on Windows 11

Once linked, Phone Link divides its user interface into clean functional tabs accessible from the left-hand navigation sidebar:

Handling Text Messages

Click on the Messages tab. Phone Link presents ongoing message threads initiated since the Bluetooth connection was established. You can type replies into the message compose box and hit Enter to transmit. Sent messages are relayed through your iPhone cellular connection or Apple iMessage servers.

Making and Answering Phone Calls

Select the Calls tab to view recent call logs or access an on-screen dialler pad. When someone calls your iPhone, a persistent desktop toast notification appears in the lower-right corner of Windows 11, giving you options to answer, decline, or reply with a quick text. When connected, call audio routes through your default Windows default communications device (such as a wireless headset or desktop speakers).

Troubleshooting Common Connection Interruptions

If Phone Link loses contact with your iPhone or alerts stop appearing, review these common remedies:

  • Bluetooth Proximity: Ensure your iPhone remains within 10 metres of your computer to avoid packet drops on Bluetooth Low Energy channels.
  • Focus and Battery Saver: Verify that neither Windows Focus Assist nor iOS Low Power Mode is suppressing background Bluetooth refresh cycles.
  • Re-synchronise Pairing: Open Windows Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices, remove the paired iPhone, and repeat the QR handshake to generate fresh cryptographic keys.
