How to Find and Delete Large Duplicate Files Using Files by Google on Android

Smartphones accumulate digital clutter at an alarming pace. Between WhatsApp media auto-downloads, repeated screenshot attempts, camera bursts, and multiple downloads of identical PDF email attachments, duplicate files silently consume gigabytes of precious internal storage. Manually searching through photo galleries and download folders to find redundant copies is tedious and error-prone. With Google’s official file management app, Files by Google, Android handsets can automatically scan internal storage, identify byte-for-byte duplicate files, and safely purge redundant copies with a single tap.

How Files by Google Identifies Duplicate Media

Files by Google uses intelligent on-device hashing rather than relying purely on file names:

  • Cryptographic Hash Comparison: The app compares the actual binary data of images, audio, and documents, ensuring two photos are genuine duplicates even if one was renamed IMG_001.jpg and the other photo(1).jpg.
  • Original File Protection: The clean assistant clearly badges the original file and marks only the secondary duplicate copies for deletion, ensuring you never accidentally erase your only copy of a memory.
  • Safe Offline Scanning: Duplicate analysis occurs completely offline in local memory; personal photos and sensitive documents are never uploaded to cloud servers for scanning.

How to Scan for and Remove Duplicate Files

To clean duplicate downloads and photos on any Android handset:

  1. Open the Files by Google app on your Android smartphone (pre-installed on Pixel and Motorola; available free from the Google Play Store for all Android devices).
  2. Tap the Clean tab located in the lower-left corner of the navigation bar.
  3. The cleaning dashboard will present personalized cleanup recommendation cards based on your storage usage.
  4. Locate the card titled Duplicate files and tap Select files.
  5. Files by Google will display matching pairs or clusters of identical images and documents side by side.
  6. Review the selections. Tap All duplicates to auto-select redundant copies while preserving originals, or manually select checkboxes for specific files.
  7. Tap the blue Move x file(s) to Bin button at the bottom of the screen.
  8. Confirm the prompt. The duplicate items will move into the Bin immediately, reclaiming internal storage.

Additional Built-In Cleanup Tools in Files by Google

While inside the Clean tab, you can reclaim several additional gigabytes of space:

  • Junk Files: Tap Clean [X] MB to safely delete temporary app caches, residual installation APK files, and obsolete system logs.
  • Large Files: Tap Delete large files to review video recordings and heavy downloads exceeding 50MB, sorting them from largest to smallest for rapid storage recovery.
  • Unused Apps: Identifies software packages installed on your handset that have not been opened in the last 90 days.
