How to Enable and Use Live Transcribe for Real-Time Speech-to-Text on Android

Whether accommodating hearing loss, attending lectures in noisy lecture halls, following fast-paced conversations, or reviewing spoken instructions, reading spoken words in real time can transform daily communication. Developed by Google in partnership with Gallaudet University, Live Transcribe is an Android accessibility service that captures spoken dialogue through your phone microphone and translates speech into large, readable text on your display with minimal latency.

Features of Live Transcribe on Android

Live Transcribe offers several powerful communication utilities:

  • Real-Time Subtitling: Accurately converts speech into continuous flowing text across more than 80 languages and dialects.
  • Ambient Sound Detection: Detects and displays non-speech acoustic cues in brackets, such as [Door knocking], [Applause], [Dog barking], or [Siren].
  • Two-Way Communication: Features a built-in keyboard button that allows non-verbal users to type responses back to speaking participants.
  • Transcription History: Securely saves transcripts on your device for up to three days, allowing you to copy notes from meetings or interviews.

How to Enable Live Transcribe in Android Settings

Live Transcribe is built into Google Pixel devices and available for download on all modern Android devices via the Google Play Store:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android device.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  3. Under the Hearing section, tap on Live Transcribe.
  4. Toggle on the Live Transcribe shortcut.
  5. A floating accessibility button or two-finger swipe gesture indicator will appear on your screen, allowing you to launch speech transcription from any application instantly.

Using Live Transcribe During Conversations

To transcribe an in-person conversation or video playback:

  1. Tap the floating Live Transcribe icon on your screen.
  2. Position your phone so the microphone faces the speaking person.
  3. Spoken words will immediately begin rendering in crisp, readable font across your screen.
  4. Tap the Settings gear icon in the bottom-left corner to adjust text sizing, switch to dark high-contrast mode, or select secondary languages for bilingual conversations.

Saving and Copying Transcription History

By default, Live Transcribe discards text once closed to protect user privacy. To enable temporary history logging for study or work notes:

  1. Inside Live Transcribe, tap the Settings gear icon > More settings.
  2. Toggle on Save transcription.
  3. Transcripts are securely stored locally on your device for 3 days.
  4. Press and hold any text block in your transcription window to copy the notes to your clipboard, Google Keep, or email.
