Keeping dozens of browser tabs open throughout your workday is standard practice for modern multitasking. However, every open webpage—especially resource-heavy sites containing embedded videos, complex JavaScript frameworks, and live tracking scripts—silently consumes hundreds of megabytes of RAM and drains your laptop battery in the background. Microsoft Edge includes an intelligent resource management technology called Sleeping Tabs. By automatically putting inactive tabs to sleep, Edge reclaims up to 85% of memory and reduces CPU consumption without closing your pages.
How Sleeping Tabs Work
Sleeping Tabs balances performance and convenience seamlessly:
- Intelligent Suspension: When a background tab sits untouched past your specified idle timeout (e.g., 30 minutes), Edge releases its allocated RAM and freezes background CPU timers.
- Visual Cue: Sleeping tabs appear slightly faded or translucent along your top tab bar, confirming that they are resting and not consuming resources.
- Instant Wake-Up: Clicking on a sleeping tab restores its full state and memory instantaneously right where you left off.
- Smart Exemptions: Edge automatically detects and prevents tabs from sleeping if they are actively playing audio, streaming video, or running live background forms.
How to Enable and Configure Sleeping Tabs in Microsoft Edge
Customising your sleeping tab preferences takes just a few steps:
- Launch Microsoft Edge on your PC or Mac.
- Click the three-dots menu (…) in the top-right corner and select Settings.
- Click on System and performance in the left sidebar.
- Scroll down to the Optimise Performance section.
- Ensure the toggle for Save resources with sleeping tabs is turned On.
- Locate the setting labelled Put inactive tabs to sleep after the specified amount of time:.
- Click the dropdown menu and select your preferred inactivity timeout:
- 5 minutes: Most aggressive memory savings (ideal for laptops with 8GB RAM).
- 30 minutes: Balanced sweet spot for general daily computing.
- 1 hour or 2 hours: Relaxed setting for users who switch between reference tabs slowly.
- Toggle on Fade sleeping tabs so you can clearly see which tabs are asleep.
How to Add Specific Websites to the Never-Sleep List
If you have webmail portals, trading dashboards, or live messaging apps (like WhatsApp Web or Slack) that you want active at all times:
- Under the same Optimise Performance settings page, find Never put these sites to sleep.
- Click the Add button.
- Enter the website URL (e.g.,
https://web.whatsapp.com) and click Add. - Edge will permanently exclude that domain from sleep rules.
