How to Transfer Files Between Android and Windows PC Using Quick Share

For years, Android users looked enviously at Apple’s seamless AirDrop ecosystem, having to rely on physical USB cables, cloud drive uploads, or third-party web tools just to send photos from their phone to their computer. Today, Google and Samsung have unified their wireless sharing protocols into Quick Share. With the official Quick Share app for Windows, you can transfer multi-gigabyte video files, full-resolution photo albums, and documents wirelessly between Android and Windows PCs at high speeds without cables or internet uploads.

How Quick Share Works

Quick Share uses local peer-to-peer technology for fast, private transfers:

  • Direct Peer-to-Peer Wi-Fi: Creates a high-speed direct Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection between devices, meaning transfers do not consume your home internet bandwidth or cellular data.
  • End-to-End Encryption: Files are sent directly between the two physical devices without passing through external cloud servers.
  • Device Visibility Controls: Choose whether your computer is visible to Everyone, Contacts only, or Your devices only.

Step 1: Install Quick Share on Your Windows PC

Quick Share for Windows is an official free utility from Google:

  1. On your Windows 10 or 11 PC, download Quick Share for Windows from the official Android website (android.com/better-together/quick-share-app/).
  2. Run the installer and sign in with the same Google Account you use on your Android smartphone.
  3. Set your computer name (e.g., Work Desktop).
  4. Under Who can share with you, select Your devices (this allows automatic file transfers between your phone and PC without manual approval prompts).

Step 2: Send Files from Android to Windows PC

Transferring media from your phone to PC takes two taps:

  1. Open the Google Photos or Files app on your Android device and select the photos, videos, or documents you want to transfer.
  2. Tap the Share icon.
  3. Tap on Quick Share.
  4. Your phone will scan the immediate area. Your Windows PC will appear in the Nearby devices list.
  5. Tap your PC’s icon. The files will transmit instantly over high-speed Wi-Fi Direct and save automatically to your PC’s Downloads folder.

Step 3: Send Files from Windows PC to Android

Sending files from your computer to your phone:

  1. In Windows File Explorer, right-click any file or folder and select Send with Quick Share (or drag and drop files directly into the Quick Share desktop window).
  2. Select your Android phone from the nearby devices list.
  3. Your phone will receive the transfer seamlessly.
