Browsing overseas news outlets, booking tickets on international train portals, or researching foreign technical documentation frequently leads you to websites written in French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Chinese, or Italian. While users historically relied on clunky third-party browser plugins or copied text into Google Translate, Apple includes a native, privacy-first translation engine built directly into Safari across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. With a single tap, the entire webpage converts into fluent English while preserving all formatting, images, and layout structures.
Why Use Safari’s Built-In Translation?
Apple’s native translator provides distinct advantages over external web tools:
- On-Device Privacy: Safari processes translations securely through Apple’s neural engines without sending your browsing session to advertising aggregators.
- Intact Page Formatting: Preserves headings, tables, photo captions, navigation menus, and interactive buttons without distorting CSS stylesheets.
- Automatic Domain Translation: Once you translate a domain, Safari will automatically translate subsequent pages you click within that website.
How to Translate a Webpage in Safari on iPhone and iPad
Translating a foreign site on mobile takes two taps:
- Open Safari on your iPhone or iPad and navigate to any foreign language webpage.
- Look at the address bar:
- If Safari detects a foreign language, a small Translate icon (speech bubble with letters) will appear inside the address bar.
- Tap the aA icon (or the Translate button) on the left side of the URL bar.
- From the popover menu, tap Translate to English.
- If this is your first time using the feature, tap Enable Translation on the Apple privacy prompt.
- The webpage text will instantly transition into English.
- To view the original untranslated text, tap the address bar icon again and select View Original.
How to Translate a Webpage in Safari on Mac
Using the translation tool on macOS is equally straightforward:
- Launch Safari on your Mac and load the foreign webpage.
- Look at the far right end of the Smart Search / Address field for the Translate icon (two chat bubbles).
- Click the Translate icon.
- Click on Translate to English from the dropdown.
- The page re-renders in English immediately. Click the icon again anytime to toggle back to View Original.
Adding Preferred Translation Languages
If you want Safari to support additional languages, go to Settings > General > Language & Region on iPhone or System Settings > General > Language & Region > Translation Languages on Mac to download offline language packs for faster translation.
