When living with a partner or raising children together, capturing memories often leads to a fragmented photo collection. One person snaps portraits at a school event, while the other takes candid holiday pictures at the beach. Constantly reminding each other to “AirDrop those photos” or manually compiling shared albums every weekend quickly becomes a tedious chore that many busy parents and couples abandon.
Google Photos includes an automated family sharing feature called Partner Sharing. Once configured, Google Photos automatically shares your photos directly into your partner’s library the moment they back up to the cloud. You can share your entire camera stream or use facial recognition to share only photos containing specific children or pets. This guide details how to set up, filter, and save photos via Partner Sharing.
How Partner Sharing Functions Between Two Accounts
Partner Sharing operates under transparent privacy and storage guidelines:
- Continuous Automatic Sync: New photographs taken on your device are instantly shared with your partner as soon as Wi-Fi backup completes.
- Zero Double Storage Penalty: Shared photos stored in your partner’s view do not consume your partner’s Google account storage quota unless they choose to save them into their personal library.
- Granular Face Filtering: You do not have to share every screenshot or receipt; you can instruct Google Photos to share only photos showing specific recognized faces.
- Reciprocal Option: Both partners can send an invitation to each other, creating a truly unified two-way family photo library.
Setting Up Partner Sharing in Google Photos
Connecting with your partner takes less than two minutes on Android or iPhone:
- Open the Google Photos app on your device.
- Tap your Profile icon in the top-right corner.
- Select Photos settings.
- Tap Sharing, then tap Partner sharing.
- Tap Get started.
- Type your partner’s email address (must be a Google Account) and select their contact card.
Choosing Sharing Filters and Start Dates
Next, define what content your partner is allowed to see:
- Choose what to share:
- All photos: Shares every camera photo from today forward and past library images.
- Photos of specific people: Tap this option to select face groups (e.g. your children and partner). Google Photos will automatically identify and share only pictures featuring those faces.
- Choose when to start sharing:
- Since the beginning: Shares your entire lifetime library matching the filter.
- Since today: Only shares photos captured from today forward.
- Review your selected parameters and tap Next.
- Tap Send invitation.
Accepting the Partner Invitation and Enabling Auto-Save
To finalize the connection, your partner must accept the invite on their device:
- Your partner opens Google Photos and navigates to the Sharing tab.
- Tap the Partner sharing invitation banner.
- Tap Accept.
- To save pictures automatically to their personal camera roll: Tap Save to your account and choose All photos.
Even if you accidentally delete a picture from your library later, your partner’s auto-saved copy remains permanently safe in their cloud archive.
