How to Use the Changes Tab in Microsoft Edge DevTools to Track and Export Real-Time CSS and HTML Modifications

During front-end web development and rapid UI debugging in Microsoft Edge, developers frequently adjust CSS rules, tweak spacing in the Styles pane, and modify HTML attributes directly inside DevTools. However, after making dozens of incremental tweaks across multiple stylesheets, keeping track of every modified rule or copying them back to your source code repository manually becomes disorganized and prone to lost changes.

Microsoft Edge DevTools includes a dedicated utility called the Changes Tab (accessible within the drawer panel) that records every stylesheet edit made in real time and presents them as a git-style unified diff. This guide explains how to open the Changes tab, inspect modifications, revert unintended edits, and export clean diffs directly to your project.

What the Changes Tab Tracks

The Changes tab maintains an active diff buffer of all modifications made during the current DevTools session. Specifically, it monitors:

  • CSS rules modified, added, or commented out in the Elements > Styles pane.
  • Direct edits made inside stylesheets via the Sources panel.
  • Overridden property values and inline style declarations.

Opening the Changes Drawer in Edge DevTools

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and press F12 (or Ctrl + Shift + I on Windows / Cmd + Option + I on macOS) to launch DevTools.
  2. Press Ctrl + Shift + P (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + P (macOS) to open the Command Menu.
  3. Type Changes and select Show Changes.
  4. Alternatively, click the Customise and control DevTools menu (three vertical dots in the top-right corner), navigate to More tools, and choose Changes.

The Changes panel appears docked in the bottom drawer alongside the Console.

Reviewing Diffs and Exporting Edits

Once you modify styles in the Elements panel:

  • The left sidebar of the Changes panel lists every modified stylesheet file.
  • Selecting a file displays a syntax-highlighted unified diff:
    • Red strikethrough lines represent deleted or replaced CSS rules.
    • Green highlighted lines represent newly inserted CSS declarations.
  • Copying Diffs: Right-click inside the diff pane and select Copy Rule or Copy All Changes to copy the clean CSS block into your IDE (such as VS Code).
  • Reverting Changes: If an experimental styling tweak produced unexpected layout regressions, click the Revert all changes to current file button in the Changes toolbar to instantly restore the original stylesheet state without refreshing the webpage.

Comparison: Changes Tab vs Local Overrides

Feature Changes Tab Local Overrides
Persistence Session-only (cleared on hard reload) Permanent (persisted to local disk folder)
Workflow Goal Quick review and clipboard export of diffs Long-term mockups and offline client-side caching
Setup Required Zero configuration Requires local folder binding and permissions
