Modern mobile applications frequently bombard users with dozens of notifications daily—ranging from promotional discount alerts and social updates to critical two-factor authentication codes and urgent delivery messages. In earlier versions of mobile operating systems, your only option was an all-or-nothing toggle: allow an app to send every notification, or block it entirely and risk missing important operational alerts. To resolve this frustration, Android features Notification Channels (also referred to as Notification Categories). By breaking down an app’s alerts into granular streams, Android allows you to silence marketing notifications while keeping high-priority security and transaction alerts loud and prominent.
Understanding How Notification Channels Function
Notification Channels divide an application’s alert capabilities into developer-defined categories:
- Granular Control: In a food delivery or ride-sharing app, you can disable “Offers, Promotions, and Discounts” while maintaining high-priority sound and vibration for “Driver Location & Order Arrival”.
- Custom Alert Importance: For each individual channel, you can configure whether alerts sound an audible tone, vibrate, pop up silently on screen (Heads-up), or minimise discreetly into the notification shade.
- Lock Screen Visibility: Hide sensitive content (such as banking account balances or private messages) from specific channels on the lock screen while showing benign alerts openly.
- Do Not Disturb (DND) Overrides: Allow specific critical channels (like server alarms or family direct messages) to bypass active Do Not Disturb quiet hours.
Step 1: Access Notification Channels for Any App
There are two quick methods to access an app’s category controls on Android 13, 14, and 15:
Method A: Directly from an Incoming Notification (Fastest)
- When an annoying notification appears, swipe down to reveal your notification shade.
- Press and hold (long-press) on the specific notification card.
- Tap the Settings gear icon or select Turn off notifications. Android will highlight the exact notification channel that generated the alert.
Method B: Through the Android System Settings
- Open the Settings app on your Android device.
- Navigate to Apps (or Apps & notifications) > See all apps.
- Scroll to and select the target application (for example, your banking app, WhatsApp, or Instagram).
- Tap on Notifications. You will see a complete list of all Notification categories configured by that app.
Step 2: Silence Promotional Spam while Keeping Critical Alerts
Once you are viewing the Notification Categories list:
- Inspect the various category toggles. A typical shopping or travel app might list categories such as:
- Account Security & Fraud Alerts
- Order Status & Deliveries
- Newsletters & Promotions
- Recommendations & Feedback
- Toggle off unwanted streams like Promotions, Special Offers, or Survey Requests.
- Leave Account Updates and Deliveries toggled On. The app will never disturb you with marketing campaigns again, but will reliably notify you when an item arrives.
Step 3: Customise Sounds, Vibrations, and Importance for Individual Channels
Rather than merely turning a channel on or off, you can fine-tune its sensory behaviour:
- Instead of tapping the toggle switch, tap directly on the text name of an active notification channel (for example, tap the words Direct Messages).
- Configure the available delivery options:
- Default (Alerting): Rings or vibrates based on your phone’s general sound profile.
- Silent: Delivered to your notification tray with zero sound, zero vibration, and no pop-up disruption.
- Pop on screen: Displays a heads-up floating banner across your active screen when unlocked.
- Sound: Tap to assign a unique, custom ringtone to this channel so you can identify the alert type by sound alone without looking at the screen.
- Vibration: Customise whether this specific alert triggers haptic motors.
Step 4: Configure Lock Screen and Do Not Disturb Overrides
Within the detailed channel settings screen, scroll down to access advanced privacy options:
- Lock Screen: Choose between Show all notification content, Hide sensitive content, or Don’t show notifications on lock screen for this specific category.
- Bypass Do Not Disturb: Toggle this switch to On if this channel represents urgent family alerts or server uptime monitors that must wake you even when your phone is in overnight DND mode.
Step 5: How to Re-Enable Notification Categories in Android 14 and 15 (Samsung One UI 6.1+)
If you are using a recent Samsung Galaxy phone running One UI 6.1 or newer, Samsung hides granular notification categories by default. You can easily re-enable them:
- Open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings.
- Scroll to the very bottom and toggle on Manage notification categories for each app.
- Return to the app’s notification settings to regain full granular channel controls.
Troubleshooting Notification Channel Issues
- App Lists Only “Miscellaneous” or “General”: Legacy apps developed for older Android versions (pre-Android 8.0) that have not adopted modern API standards dump all notifications into a single generic bucket. For these apps, you can only toggle alerts globally.
- Changes Reverting After App Updates: When an app undergoes a major version update, developers may retire old channel IDs and introduce new ones. If promotional alerts reappear, revisit the app’s notification settings to disable the newly introduced channel names.
