How to Set Up and Run Live Polls and Q&A Sessions in Google Meet

Maintaining active engagement during large webinars, virtual all-hands presentations, or team training workshops often proves challenging when relying solely on an open chat box. Rapidly scrolling text messages cause critical inquiries to disappear, while gathering quick consensus on key decisions becomes messy. Google Meet includes dedicated engagement tools—specifically interactive Polls and structured Q&A modules—built directly into the meeting interface to help organisers gather audience feedback and manage queries without interrupting presentation flow.

Feature Availability and Workspace Editions

Live Polls and Q&A functionality are supported on Google Meet web browsers and mobile apps (Android and iOS) for Google Workspace accounts, including:

  • Google Workspace Business Standard and Business Plus
  • Google Workspace Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
  • Google Workspace for Education Plus and Teaching & Learning Upgrade
  • Google Workspace Individual subscribers

While external or personal Google account participants can vote on active polls and submit questions, initiating and moderating them requires an eligible host or designated co-host license.

Creating and Launching Live Polls in Google Meet

Meeting hosts and co-hosts can prepare polls in advance or formulate them spontaneously during a call:

  1. During an active Google Meet session, click the Activities icon (the triangle, square, and circle icon) in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Select Polls from the Activities drawer.
  3. Click Start a poll.
  4. Enter your prompt or question in the text field.
  5. Input candidate response options. Click Add option to include supplementary answers (up to 10 options per poll).
  6. Decide on privacy settings:
    • Tick Responses are anonymous if you want participant names hidden from poll results. Note that meeting organisers receive a detailed summary spreadsheet afterwards that respects this setting.
  7. Choose your launch timing:
    • Click Launch to broadcast the poll immediately to all attendees.
    • Click Save to store the poll as an inactive draft, allowing you to launch it at an appropriate juncture during your slide deck.

Managing Live Poll Results and Voting

Once a poll is launched, attendees receive a banner notification inviting them to vote. To monitor and control voting:

  • Show Results to Everyone: By default, results remain visible only to hosts. Toggle Show results to everyone to enable attendees to view real-time percentage bars as votes accumulate.
  • End Voting: When the discussion concludes, click End poll. Attendees can still review the final tallies, but cannot cast further votes.
  • Delete Polls: Click the trash icon to permanently remove an erroneous poll.

Configuring and Moderating Q&A Sessions

The Google Meet Q&A module replaces chaotic chat spam with an organised submission queue where participants can upvote relevant questions:

  1. Click the Activities icon in the bottom-right corner and select Q&A.
  2. Click Turn on Q&A to open the question submission portal for attendees.
  3. To prevent off-topic or inappropriate inquiries in large corporate or school assemblies, toggle Moderate questions on. When active, submitted questions remain hidden in an unapproved host queue until explicitly approved.

Reviewing, Upvoting, and Answering Audience Questions

As participants post questions:

  • Audience Upvoting: Attendees can browse the public questions list and click the Upvote (thumbs up) button on inquiries they want answered. This bubbles high-priority topics to the top.
  • Filtering Questions: Hosts can click the filter dropdown to display questions by All questions, Unanswered, Answered, or Hidden, as well as sort by Oldest, Newest, or Most popular.
  • Marking as Answered: Once a question is addressed verbally, click Mark as answered (tick icon) to move it out of the active queue.
  • Hiding Inappropriate Inquiries: Click the eye icon (Hide) to remove a question from attendee view without permanently deleting it.

Exporting Post-Meeting Engagement Reports

When a Google Meet session featuring polls or Q&A terminates, Google automatically generates comprehensive post-call analytical data:

  1. The primary meeting organiser receives an automated email from Google Meet within minutes of the call ending.
  2. The email contains two attached Google Sheets spreadsheets:
    • Polls Report: Lists each poll prompt, submission timestamps, voter names (unless configured as anonymous), and chosen options.
    • Q&A Report: Records every submitted question, submitter identity, timestamps, total upvote counts, and whether the host marked the item as answered or hidden.

These automated reports provide actionable documentation for following up on unanswered customer inquiries or recording employee survey decisions.
