How to Manage, Back Up, and Export Google Maps On-Device Timeline on Android and iPhone

For over a decade, Google Maps Timeline (formerly Location History) stored your visited places, travel routes, and commute durations remotely in the cloud, accessible through any desktop browser. To enhance user privacy and prevent subpoena access to centralised location databases, Google transitioned Timeline to an on-device storage model. Your location history is now stored strictly on your local smartphone hardware, and access via the web browser version has been deprecated.

This tutorial explains how to manage your on-device Timeline in Google Maps on Android and iPhone, enable encrypted cloud backups, export your raw location history files, and transfer Timeline data to a new smartphone.

Understanding the On-Device Timeline Architecture

The transition from cloud-based to local Timeline storage introduces crucial operational changes:

  • Local Storage Encryption: Your visited locations, driving routes, and flight histories are stored directly in your smartphone’s encrypted app storage.
  • Browser Interface Deprecation: You can no longer view or edit your Timeline via maps.google.com/timeline on desktop computers.
  • Device-Specific Histories: If you use both a tablet and a phone, each device maintains its own independent local log unless cloud backup is configured.

Enabling and Managing Timeline on Android and iOS

To inspect your local Timeline and configure auto-delete rules:

  1. Open the Google Maps app on your Android smartphone or iPhone.
  2. Tap your Profile picture in the top-right corner of the search bar.
  3. Tap Your Timeline.
  4. The Timeline interface displays your daily travels, segmented into tabs: Day, Trips, Insights, Places, Cities, and World.
  5. To configure retention settings, tap the three dots (⋮ or …) in the upper-right corner and select Settings and privacy.
  6. Under the Location settings section:
    • Tap Location History is on to toggle global tracking.
    • Tap Auto-delete Location History to automatically purge records older than 3 months, 18 months, or 36 months.

Enabling Encrypted Cloud Backups for Timeline

Because Timeline data resides on your physical phone, losing or upgrading your device will wipe your historical travel records unless you enable encrypted cloud backups.

  1. In the Google Maps app, open Your Timeline.
  2. Tap the three dots (â‹®) in the top-right corner and select Settings and privacy.
  3. Under the Timeline backup section, locate Cloud backup.
  4. Toggle on Backup (or tap Back up your data).
  5. Google Maps creates an encrypted snapshot of your location logs linked to your Google Account. Google cannot read this data without your device authentication credentials.
  6. Review the status: when successful, the screen displays “Backup is on” along with the exact date and file size of your latest backup.
Timeline Management Action Navigation Path Outcome / Effect
Manual Cloud Backup Timeline > Settings > Back up now Forces an immediate encrypted synchronization before switching devices.
Export Timeline Data Settings > Export Timeline data Saves a local JSON or KML file containing all GPS breadcrumb records.
Delete Entire Timeline Settings > Delete all Location History Permanently purges all visited locations from local storage and cloud backups.
Delete Single Day/Stop Select Day/Stop > Trash icon Removes individual erroneous location hops or sensitive visits.

Switching to a New Smartphone

When you upgrade to a new iPhone or Android device, install Google Maps, sign in to your Google Account, navigate to Your Timeline, and select Restore from backup. Select your previous phone from the backup list to import all historical travels seamlessly.

Exporting Timeline Data to JSON or KML Files

If you want to maintain an independent archive or import your travel logs into GIS software, export your raw data directly from the phone:

  1. In Google Maps, tap your Profile picture > Your Timeline.
  2. Tap the three dots (â‹®) > Settings and privacy.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Export Timeline data.
  4. Select your export format (typically structured .json).
  5. Save the exported file to your phone’s internal storage, Google Drive, or transfer it to your computer via USB or AirDrop.

Troubleshooting On-Device Timeline Gaps and Errors

If your Timeline misses trips or fails to back up:

  • Background Location Permissions: On iOS, ensure Settings > Google Maps > Location is set to Always with Precise Location enabled. On Android, verify that battery optimisation is not killing Google Maps in the background (set to Unrestricted).
  • Backup Failed / Storage Full: Encrypted backups require active Google Account cloud storage. If your Google One quota is 100% full, clean up Gmail or Google Drive files to restore backup operations.
  • Inaccurate Snapping: If a stop records the wrong business, tap the location card in your Timeline, tap Edit, and select the correct venue from nearby suggestions.
