How to Choose and Back Up Specific Device Folders in Google Photos on Android

By default, Google Photos on Android automatically backs up images and videos captured by your smartphone’s primary camera app. However, your device stores thousands of additional media files across isolated directories—including WhatsApp images, Instagram downloads, screenshots, screen recordings, and graphic design exports. Left unmanaged, backing up every local folder rapidly exhausts your 15 GB Google Account cloud storage tier. Fortunately, Google Photos allows you to choose exactly which device folders sync to the cloud.

Understanding Android Media Folders in Google Photos

Android’s file system segregates media according to the originating application. While your camera photos live in the standard DCIM/Camera directory, third-party apps write media to dedicated subfolders:

  • WhatsApp Images & Video: Stored within Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media.
  • Screenshots: Stored under Pictures/Screenshots or DCIM/Screenshots depending on your phone manufacturer (Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus).
  • Downloads: Temporary web downloads located in the root Download directory.
  • Social Apps: Dedicated folders for Instagram, Snapchat, Telegram, and Facebook Messenger.

Google Photos treats each directory as an independent storage container, giving you granular control over backup toggles.

Method 1: Managing Folder Backup from the Library Tab

The most visual method to review all detected local media folders is through the in-app Library view:

  1. Open the Google Photos app on your Android smartphone or tablet.
  2. Tap the Library tab in the bottom navigation bar.
  3. At the top of the Library screen, locate the Photos on device section.
  4. Tap View all to inspect every directory containing media files on your device.
  5. Folders with a cloud icon featuring a diagonal slash through it are currently excluded from cloud backup. Folders without a slash (or with a blue upload badge) are actively synchronising.
  6. Tap on any folder you want to inspect (for example, Download or WhatsApp Images).
  7. At the top of the album preview, toggle the Back up switch to the On position.
  8. Google Photos will queue all existing media in that folder and upload subsequent incoming files automatically.

Method 2: Configuring Device Folders in Google Photos Settings

You can also review a master checklist of all device folders from the centralized Backup settings menu:

  1. In the Google Photos app, tap your Profile avatar in the top right corner.
  2. Select Photos settings (gear icon).
  3. Tap Backup at the top of the settings list.
  4. Scroll down and tap Back up device folders under the Settings header.
  5. A complete list of all detected local folders will appear, complete with individual toggle switches.
  6. Switch the toggles On for folders you want preserved in the cloud (such as Canva or Lightroom), and switch them Off for folders you wish to keep strictly local (such as Screenshots or meme folders).

How to Prevent WhatsApp and Telegram from Consuming Cloud Quota

Messaging applications often receive hundreds of low-quality memes, animated GIFs, and forwarded documents each week. To prevent these from cluttering your Google Photos library:

  1. Navigate to Photos settings > Backup > Back up device folders.
  2. Locate WhatsApp Images, WhatsApp Animated Gifs, and WhatsApp Video.
  3. Ensure all three toggles are turned Off.
  4. Existing photos already backed up will remain in your cloud timeline, but future received messages will stay exclusively on your phone’s physical internal storage.

Freeing Up Space on Android While Keeping Cloud Copies

Once your desired folders are successfully backed up to your Google Account, you can reclaim physical storage on your smartphone without deleting your cloud copies:

  1. Tap your profile icon and select Free up space.
  2. Google Photos scans your device for media files that have already been securely uploaded to your Google cloud account.
  3. Tap the confirmation button to safely delete the local copies from your phone’s internal storage.
  4. The photos remain fully viewable, searchable, and shareable inside the Google Photos app whenever your device has an active internet connection.

Curating your device folder backups ensures your essential family memories and creative projects stay safely preserved in the cloud while preserving precious storage space across your Google Account.
