Live polling in Microsoft Teams transforms passive webinars, team check-ins, and all-hands presentations into engaging, interactive sessions. Powered by Microsoft Forms through the integrated Polls app, organisers and presenters can survey attendees in real time, collect instant anonymous feedback, display dynamic response word clouds, and download detailed survey analytics without forcing participants to leave the Teams meeting window.
Requirements and Permissions for Teams Polls
Before launching a poll in Microsoft Teams, verify that your tenant and meeting environment support polling apps:
- The meeting organiser or presenter must have permission to add apps to Teams chats and meetings (configured in Microsoft 365 Admin Center under Teams app permission policies).
- External guests and anonymous attendees can vote on active polls, but creating and launching polls requires meeting organiser or designated presenter roles.
- Channel meetings support polls provided the Microsoft Polls app is enabled for that specific team.
Adding the Polls App to a Microsoft Teams Meeting
You can prepare polls before a meeting starts or configure them on the fly while a meeting is underway:
Pre-Meeting Setup (Recommended)
- Open the Calendar tab in Microsoft Teams.
- Double-click your scheduled meeting invitation to open the meeting details panel.
- Click the + (Add a tab) icon in the navigation bar along the top of the meeting window.
- Search for Polls in the app directory, select it, and click Save.
- A dedicated Polls tab will appear, giving you a quiet workspace to draft questions before attendees join.
In-Meeting Setup
- Join your active Teams meeting.
- Click the Apps button on the top meeting control ribbon.
- Select Polls from the list of meeting extensions and click Save.
- A Polls icon will appear directly in your top toolbar next to Chat and People controls.
Creating and Launching Different Poll Types
Microsoft Polls offers several question formats tailored to different meeting objectives:
1. Multiple Choice Poll
- Open the Polls pane and click New poll.
- Select Multiple Choice.
- Enter your question and input the response choices. Click Add option to include additional answers.
- Toggle Multiple answers if participants are allowed to select more than one choice.
- Customise your privacy settings:
- Share results automatically after voting: Keep enabled to show live bar graphs to attendees immediately.
- Keep responses anonymous: Toggle this option on if gathering sensitive feedback or honest appraisals.
- Allow co-presenters to edit: Enables fellow meeting leads to modify questions or review drafts.
- Click Save as draft to queue the question for later, or click Launch now to push the poll to all attendees.
2. Word Cloud Poll
Ideal for brainstorming and icebreakers, Word Cloud allows participants to submit short one-to-two word answers that grow larger on screen the more frequently they are typed:
- Click New poll and choose Word Cloud.
- Enter an open-ended question (for example, “What is the single biggest priority for Q4?”).
- Click Launch. Responses populate an interactive visual cluster in real time.
3. Rating Poll
Collect quick numerical scores using stars or numbers (from 1 to 5):
- Select Rating from the poll creation menu.
- Enter your feedback prompt (such as rating the usefulness of a training session).
- Select your symbol (stars or numbers) and levels (up to 5), then launch.
Managing Live Polls During Meetings
When you launch a poll, a pop-up modal appears directly in the centre of every attendee’s video screen, as well as an interactive voting card inside the meeting chat panel. Attendees simply click their preferred option and tap Submit.
As the presenter, you retain full operational control from the Polls side panel:
- Close poll: When voting time has concluded, click the dropdown menu next to the active poll and select Close poll. This prevents new votes while preserving existing data.
- Delete poll: Remove accidental or duplicate drafts before attendees see them.
Exporting and Analysing Polling Results
After your meeting wraps up, you can review attendee responses or import data into Microsoft Excel:
- Reopen the meeting chat or go back to the meeting details in your Teams Calendar.
- Select the Polls tab.
- Click the down arrow next to the completed poll and select Export results.
- Teams will generate an Excel workbook containing participant timestamps, responder names (unless marked anonymous), and choice selections.
Using live polls elevates team collaboration from one-way presentations into genuinely engaging, data-driven meetings across remote and hybrid working environments.
