How to Factory Reset iPhone

The Cryptographic Annihilation Vector

Before you sell your iPhone, send it in for hardware repair, or attempt to resolve a catastrophic software loop, you must execute a total data purge. Manually deleting photos and logging out of apps is a mathematical impossibility that leaves massive caches of your biometric data, Apple Pay tokens, and iMessage encryption keys buried deep within the solid-state drive. You must instruct the iOS kernel to execute a thermonuclear block-level format—a Factory Reset—physically shredding every single byte of personal data and restoring the operating system to its sterile, virgin state.

How to Factory Reset iPhone

Apple engineered this execution pathway to require multiple cryptographic authorizations. The kernel will fiercely resist a total wipe to prevent accidental data loss or theft, demanding your device passcode and your master Apple ID password.

1. Phase 1: The Mandatory Backup (Crucial Step):
* Once the reset is triggered, the data is mathematically vaporized forever. If you want to keep your photos and contacts, you must push them to the cloud or a Mac.
* Open Settings > Tap your Name (Apple ID) at the top > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now. Do not proceed until this completes.
2. Phase 2: Summon the Annihilation Architecture:
* Open the master Settings app (the grey gear icon).
* Scroll down and tap General.
* Scroll to the absolute bottom of the General pane.
* Tap the option explicitly labelled Transfer or Reset iPhone.
3. Phase 3: The Execution Trigger:
* You are presented with two options. Do NOT tap “Reset” (this only resets network and layout settings; it does not delete your data).
* Tap the stark, bold option at the very bottom explicitly labelled Erase All Content and Settings.
* A severe modal screen will spawn, detailing exactly what will be shredded (Apple ID, Activation Lock, Wallet data, eSIMs).
* Tap Continue.
4. Phase 4: The Cryptographic Authorization:
* The iOS kernel will throw its first defense: enter your physical device Passcode.
* The OS will attempt to execute one final, rapid iCloud backup. You can tap “Skip Backup” if you already performed Phase 1.
* The kernel will throw its final defense: you must enter your Apple ID Password to disable “Find My” and shatter the Activation Lock. This proves you are the physical owner and not a thief.
* Tap the red Erase iPhone button.
* The Mathematical Wipe: The screen instantly goes black. The Apple logo appears with a progress bar. The CPU executes a cryptographic wipe of the NAND sectors. In 5 to 10 minutes, the phone will reboot to the “Hello” screen.
