How to Change the Mac Administrator Name

The Cryptographic Identity Vector

When a MacBook is transferred from a departing employee to a new hire, simply changing the password is a severe operational hazard. The internal file system, the home folder directory, and the core master registry remain permanently cryptographically linked to the original user’s name. This creates immense confusion during network file sharing and terminal execution. You must instruct the macOS kernel to execute a deep registry override, severing the legacy alphanumeric identifier and injecting the new user’s name into the core authorization matrix.

How to Change the Mac Administrator Name

Apple engineered this process to be highly restrictive. You cannot simply double-click your name and type a new one; modifying the master identifier requires logging into a secondary, isolated administrator account to manipulate the primary target.

1. The Prerequisite Isolation (Mandatory):
* You mathematically cannot rename the account you are currently logged into.
* You must create a temporary, secondary Administrator account (System Settings > Users & Groups > Add Account).
* Log out of the target account (e.g., “John Doe”) and log into the new temporary Administrator account.
2. The Home Folder Renaming Protocol:
* Before altering the system registry, you must rename the physical directory on the solid-state drive.
* Open Finder. Navigate to the root level: `Macintosh HD` > `Users`.
* Locate the folder belonging to the target account (e.g., `johndoe`).
* Press Enter to rename it. Type the exact new, lowercase username with no spaces (e.g., `sarahsmith`). The kernel will demand the admin password to authorize the change.
3. The Registry Injection Protocol:
* Click the Apple Logo > System Settings > Users & Groups.
* Hold down the Control key and click on the target account name (“John Doe”).
* A hidden context menu will appear. Click Advanced Options.
* The kernel will demand the admin password again. You are now inside the master registry block.
4. The Precision Edit Phase:
* You must change three specific fields perfectly:
* Account Name: Change this to exactly match the folder name you created in Step 2 (e.g., `sarahsmith`).
* Full Name: Change this to the visually appealing display name (e.g., `Sarah Smith`).
* Home Directory: This is critical. Change the path to point to the newly renamed folder (e.g., `/Users/sarahsmith`).
* Click OK.
5. The Finalization Phase:
* You must Restart the Mac immediately to force the kernel to flush the old caches and lock the new alphanumeric strings into the active memory pool. You can now log into the newly named account and delete the temporary admin.
