How to Turn On the Night Light in Windows 11

The Circadian Disruption Vector

Computer monitors, particularly those utilizing LED backlighting, emit a massive amount of high-energy blue light. During daylight hours, this is beneficial for visibility and alertness. However, if you are staring at a brightly lit Windows desktop late into the evening, this blue light severely suppresses your body’s natural production of melatonin. This physiological disruption makes it significantly harder to fall asleep and degrades your overall rest quality. You must actively filter this specific light wavelength after sunset.

How to Turn On the Night Light

Windows 11 includes a native, hardware-accelerated blue light filter that digitally warms the colour temperature of your entire display.

1. Open the Start Menu and click the Settings gear icon (or press the Windows Key + I).
2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on System.
3. In the main pane, click on Display.
4. At the very top of the settings list, locate the toggle switch labelled Night light.
5. Click the toggle to switch it to the On position.
6. Your screen will instantly shift to a warmer, orange hue. To customize the intensity of this effect, click the actual text that says Night light (not the toggle switch) to open the advanced configuration menu.
7. Use the Strength slider to increase or decrease the intensity of the orange filter until it is comfortable for your eyes.

The Automation Protocol: To ensure you never forget to activate the filter, look directly below the Strength slider and toggle Schedule night light to On. You can then instruct Windows to automatically enable the filter at your exact local sunset, and disable it precisely at sunrise.
