The Application Preference Vector
For years, Apple strictly enforced a policy where Safari was the absolute, unchangeable default web browser on the iPhone. If someone texted you a link, or you clicked a URL within an email, you were forcefully booted into Safari, regardless of whether you preferred the interface of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge. This lack of choice was highly frustrating for users heavily invested in the Google ecosystem who wanted their bookmarks and passwords synced seamlessly from their desktop PC.
How to Change the Default Browser
Apple finally relinquished control over this system-level routing, allowing you to instruct iOS to permanently bypass Safari.
1. First, ensure your preferred browser (e.g., Google Chrome) is actually downloaded and installed from the App Store.
2. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
3. Scroll down the main list—past all the system settings—until you reach the massive alphabetical list of your installed third-party apps.
4. Locate your newly installed browser (e.g., Chrome) and tap on it.
5. Look for the menu option titled Default Browser App. (If this option does not appear, your chosen browser has not yet been updated by its developer to support this feature).
6. Tap on Default Browser App.
7. A list will appear showing Safari alongside your new browser. Tap on Chrome (or your preferred app) so that a blue checkmark appears next to it.
The routing alteration is immediate. The next time you click a hyperlink anywhere in the operating system, iOS will completely ignore Safari and immediately launch the webpage directly within your newly designated primary browser.
