How to Disable the Password Save Prompt in Chrome

The Redundant Credential Vector

Google Chrome features a native password manager designed to capture your login credentials. Every time you enter a username and password into a new website, a small key icon drops down from the address bar, aggressively prompting you to save the data. However, if you are a security-conscious user who relies on a dedicated, encrypted third-party password manager (like Bitwarden, 1Password, or LastPass), Chrome’s constant prompting is not only redundant but highly disruptive. Having two separate managers competing to save your credentials often leads to corrupted autofill data.

How to Disable the Password Save Prompt

You must instruct Chrome’s internal credential engine to stand down, permanently silencing the drop-down dialogue box and allowing your third-party extension to handle all authentication.

1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner to open the main menu.
3. Select Settings.
4. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Autofill and passwords.
5. Click on Google Password Manager.
6. A new interface will load. Look at the left-hand menu within this new interface and click on Settings.
7. At the very top of the list, locate the master toggle switch labelled Offer to save passwords.
8. Click the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).

Chrome will instantly cease its surveillance of your login forms. The browser will never again ask to save a password, ensuring your dedicated password management software operates without interference.
