How to Check Your Windows 11 Product Key

The License Authentication Vector

When performing a complete motherboard replacement or attempting to clean-install the operating system onto a brand new hard drive, Windows 11 frequently requires you to re-enter your 25-character digital product key to verify your license. If you originally purchased a pre-built computer (such as a Dell or HP), this key is not printed on a physical sticker on the outside of the case. Instead, the manufacturer digitally injects the license directly into the motherboard’s firmware during production.

How to Check Your Product Key

You can use a highly specific command-line query to forcefully extract this embedded digital license directly from the motherboard’s memory.

1. Click the Start Menu (or press the Windows Key).
2. Type cmd in the search bar.
3. The Command Prompt application will appear in the search results. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
4. When the User Account Control window prompts you, click Yes.
5. In the black terminal window, carefully type the following command exactly as written, including the spaces:

wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey

6. Press Enter.

The terminal will instantly query the BIOS/UEFI firmware. The output will display the exact 25-character alphanumeric string (formatted as XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX) that acts as your permanent Windows 11 license. You should immediately write this key down on a physical piece of paper before commencing any major hardware upgrades.
