How to Create a Zip File on a Mac

The File Transfer Vector

When you need to email multiple documents to a colleague or upload a massive directory of photographs to a cloud server, sending dozens of individual files is highly inefficient. Furthermore, many email clients impose strict attachment size limits. To bypass these restrictions and maintain the structural integrity of your folders during transit, you must compress the data into a single, highly efficient archive. The universally accepted format for this process is the ZIP file.

How to Create a Zip File

macOS includes a native, deeply integrated compression utility that requires no third-party software (such as WinRAR or 7-Zip) to operate.

1. Open the Finder and locate the files or folders you wish to compress.
2. If you are compressing a single folder, simply click it once to highlight it.
3. If you are compressing multiple individual files, hold down the Command (⌘) key and click each file to select them all simultaneously.
4. Once your target data is highlighted, right-click (or Control-click) on any of the selected items.
5. From the context menu that appears, select Compress “[Item Name]” (if compressing one file) or Compress [X] Items (if compressing multiple files).
6. The macOS Archive Utility will silently engage in the background. A new file ending in .zip will instantly appear in the exact same directory.

This single ZIP file now contains all your selected data, significantly reduced in overall file size, ready to be securely transmitted.
