How to Disable the Translation Prompt in Google Chrome

The Translation Interruption Vector

Google Chrome features an aggressive, native translation engine designed to automatically detect foreign languages. By default, whenever you visit a webpage that contains text in a language different from your system’s primary setting, Chrome immediately drops a large translation pop-up from the omnibox. For users who are bilingual, or those who frequently read foreign news sources and technical documentation without needing assistance, this persistent prompt becomes a highly repetitive and distracting interface interruption.

How to Disable the Translation Prompt

You can instruct Chrome to completely disable its automatic language detection architecture, preventing the translation dialogue from ever appearing.

1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner to open the main menu.
3. Select Settings.
4. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Languages.
5. Scroll down to the Google Translate section.
6. Locate the toggle switch labelled Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read.
7. Click the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).

Chrome will immediately cease scanning pages for foreign text. If you ever need to translate a specific page manually, you can still right-click anywhere on the webpage and select Translate to English from the context menu.
