The Tracking Vector
As you navigate the internet, many websites embed invisible trackers and tracking pixels from advertising networks. These are known as third-party cookies. By default, Google Chrome allows these external entities to store data on your computer, enabling them to silently build a comprehensive profile of your browsing history across completely unrelated websites. This is the primary reason why an item you view on an e-commerce store suddenly appears in advertisements across social media and news platforms.
How to Block Third-Party Cookies
You can instruct Chrome to reject all cross-site tracking cookies, significantly enhancing your digital privacy.
1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the extreme top-right corner to open the main menu.
3. Select Settings.
4. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Privacy and security.
5. Click on Third-party cookies.
6. Under the general settings, select the radio button next to Block third-party cookies.
7. Ensure the toggle switch for Send a “Do Not Track” request with your browsing traffic is also turned on for maximum privacy.
Chrome will immediately begin rejecting all cookies that do not originate from the exact domain you are currently visiting, severing the connection between advertising networks and your browsing habits.
