How to Disable “Raise to Wake” on iPhone

The Gyroscopic Battery Drain

The iPhone utilizes a background sensor algorithm known as “Raise to Wake.” By default, the operating system continuously polls the internal gyroscope and accelerometer chips while the phone is locked. If it detects a specific upward tilting motion (the kinetic signature of picking the phone up off a table), the OS automatically illuminates the OLED display. While convenient, this algorithm is easily tricked. Walking with the phone in your hand or bumping it in a loose pocket will constantly trigger the screen, leading to a massive, unnecessary drain on your battery throughout the day. You must disable this hardware trigger.

How to Turn Off Raise to Wake

You can permanently sever the bridge between the gyroscope and the display panel via the Display & Brightness settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Display & Brightness.
  3. Scroll down the page until you find the master toggle.
  4. Locate the switch labeled Raise to Wake.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Strict Display Isolation

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for analyzing tilt telemetry while the screen is dark. You can now aggressively wave the phone around, pick it up from a table, or carry it in your hand while running, and the operating system will absolutely refuse to illuminate the display. The screen will strictly remain off until you explicitly tap the glass or press the physical side power button, guaranteeing absolute manual control over your battery consumption.
