How to Disable “Type to Siri” on Apple Watch

The Accessibility Conflict

The Apple Watch features an accessibility setting called “Type to Siri.” When enabled, holding down the Digital Crown does not activate the microphone. Instead, it forces a tiny, full QWERTY keyboard (or a scribble pad on older models) onto the screen, demanding that you manually type out your request to the digital assistant. While incredibly useful for users with speech impairments, if you accidentally enable this feature, it completely breaks the fundamental purpose of a voice assistant on a wearable device. You must restore the microphone trigger.

How to Turn Off Type to Siri

You can permanently sever the connection between the hardware button and the keyboard interface via the Accessibility settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Accessibility.
  3. Scroll down to the “General” section and tap on Siri.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch at the top labeled Type to Siri.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Restoring Voice Commands

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for intercepting the Siri hardware trigger and routing it to the keyboard API. The next time you press and hold the Digital Crown, the keyboard will absolutely refuse to appear. The watch will instantly activate the microphone and the standard Siri listening animation, guaranteeing that your wearable device can once again be controlled entirely hands-free via spoken audio.
