How to Disable the Walkie-Talkie Feature on Apple Watch

The Sudden Interruption

The Apple Watch features an integrated “Walkie-Talkie” app that allows other Apple Watch users to instantly stream live audio directly through your watch’s speaker, completely bypassing standard phone calls. If you leave this feature enabled, a contact can tap your name and their voice will suddenly blare out of your wrist in real-time, whether you are in a quiet meeting, at a movie theater, or driving. To prevent these sudden, jarring audio interruptions, you must make yourself permanently unavailable.

How to Turn Off Walkie-Talkie Availability

You can permanently sever the real-time audio connection via the Apple Watch Control Center.

  1. Wake your Apple Watch screen by tapping it or raising your wrist.
  2. Swipe up from the very bottom edge of the watch face to open the Control Center.
  3. Look for the yellow icon that looks like a two-way radio (Walkie-Talkie).
  4. Tap the yellow icon once. It will turn grey.
  5. Alternatively, open the yellow Walkie-Talkie app from your app grid, and toggle the switch at the very top of the contact list to the Off position.

Absolute Silence

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background peer-to-peer audio connection. You will now appear as “Unavailable” to all of your Walkie-Talkie contacts. If someone attempts to radio you, they will receive an error on their end, and your watch will remain absolutely silent. You will not receive a notification, and their voice will absolutely never unexpectedly broadcast from your speaker, guaranteeing a professional and interruption-free environment.
