How to Block WebGL Globally (3D Graphics Rendering) in Google Chrome

The Hardware Exploit

WebGL (Web Graphics Library) is a JavaScript API embedded in Google Chrome that allows websites to bypass standard software rendering and execute complex 2D and 3D graphics directly on your computer’s physical GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). While necessary for browser-based games or 3D mapping software, it is a massive security and privacy vulnerability. WebGL can be used to uniquely “fingerprint” your graphics card to track you across the internet, and malicious websites can use it to intentionally overheat your GPU or execute buffer overflow attacks. To lock down your hardware, you must completely paralyze this API.

How to Block WebGL Globally

You can permanently sever the browser’s ability to communicate with your GPU via Chrome’s hidden command flags.

  1. Completely close Google Chrome (ensure it is not running in the system tray).
  2. Right-click the Google Chrome shortcut on your Windows desktop (or Taskbar) and select Properties.
  3. In the Properties window, locate the Target field (which shows the path to chrome.exe).
  4. Click inside the Target box, press the End key to go to the very end of the text, and type a single space.
  5. After the space, type exactly: --disable-webgl
  6. The final Target should look similar to: "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable-webgl
  7. Click Apply, then click OK.
  8. Double-click the shortcut to launch the browser.

Software Rendering Only

The change takes effect the moment the executable runs. Google Chrome will completely sever its internal connection to your physical graphics card. If a website attempts to load a 3D model, run a WebGL fingerprinting script, or launch a complex browser game, the API call will instantly fail and the canvas will remain blank. Your browser is now strictly confined to standard HTML and software rendering, guaranteeing that random websites cannot exploit your physical GPU hardware.
