How to Disable the “Prominent Haptic” (Extra Vibrations) on Apple Watch

The Aggressive Taptic Engine

The Apple Watch uses a “Taptic Engine” to deliver subtle physical taps to your wrist for incoming notifications. However, if you work in an environment where you are constantly moving, or if you wear the watch strap slightly loose, you might miss these default taps. To solve this, Apple includes a feature called “Prominent Haptic.” When enabled, the watch fires a massive, aggressive, double-buzz vibration into your wrist before the actual notification tap even occurs. While this guarantees you never miss a text, the jarring, violent buzz is highly annoying in quiet or relaxed settings. You must disable the prominent vibration profile.

How to Turn Off Prominent Haptics

You can permanently restrict the vibration motor to its default power level via the Sounds & Haptics settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Scroll down to the “Haptics” section.
  4. You will see two choices: Default and Prominent.
  5. Tap on Default to ensure the checkmark is next to it.

A Subtle Interface

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely rewrite the waveform sent to the Taptic Engine. The massive, pre-notification warning buzz is permanently deleted from the alert sequence. When you receive a text message, an email, or a phone call, the watch will simply deliver the standard, single, subtle tap against your skin. You are now guaranteed a much calmer physical interface, ensuring your watch alerts you without violently jarring your wrist every ten minutes.
