How to Disable Keyboard Sounds (Clicking Noise) on iPhone

The Acoustic Annoyance

By default, the iPhone plays a sharp, high-pitched clicking sound every single time you tap a key on the virtual keyboard. While this auditory feedback was designed to mimic a physical typewriter and help confirm keystrokes, it is universally despised in public spaces. If you are texting during a meeting, on a quiet train, or late at night in a shared bedroom, the rapid-fire clicking noise is incredibly disruptive to everyone around you. While you can silence the keyboard by flipping the physical mute switch on the side of the phone, if you want your phone to ring for phone calls but remain completely silent while typing, you must disable the keyboard audio engine.

How to Turn Off Keyboard Clicks

You can permanently silence the virtual keyboard via the Sound & Haptics settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Scroll down to the “System Sounds & Haptics” section.
  4. Locate the toggle switch labeled Keyboard Feedback and tap it.
  5. On the next screen, locate the toggle switch labeled Sound.
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Silent Typing

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely sever the connection between the virtual keyboard input and the main audio speaker. You can now type as fast as you want, and the keyboard will remain perfectly silent, regardless of whether your physical mute switch is toggled on or off. This guarantees you can hear incoming phone calls at maximum volume without broadcasting every single keystroke to the entire room.
