The Interrupted Workout
When tracking a run or a cycling session on the Apple Watch, the operating system uses the internal accelerometer and GPS to guess when you have stopped moving (such as waiting at a red light). By default, the watch will automatically pause your workout timer and attempt to resume it when you start moving again. However, this “Auto-Pause” feature is notoriously unreliable. If you are running slowly, pushing a stroller, or doing interval training, the watch will constantly pause your workout by mistake, destroying your pace metrics and ruining your data. You must permanently force the timer to run continuously.
How to Turn Off Auto-Pause for Workouts
You can permanently sever the accelerometer’s control over your workout timer via the Workout settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll all the way down the main list and tap on Workout.
- Scroll down and tap on Auto-Pause.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled Auto-Pause.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Manual Timer Control
The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for guessing your physical velocity. The next time you start a run, the timer will count upward continuously, absolutely refusing to stop until you explicitly swipe the screen and manually press the “End” or “Pause” buttons. You can now run at any pace, stop to stretch, or wait at a crosswalk without the watch ever interfering with your active workout session.
