How to Disable the “Raise to Wake” Screen Feature on iPhone

The Accidental Flashlight

Modern iPhones feature a hardware function called “Raise to Wake.” Using the internal accelerometer, the operating system attempts to detect when you physically lift the phone off a table or pull it out of your pocket, automatically igniting the lock screen so you can check the time or view notifications. However, this sensor is notoriously oversensitive. If you simply shift your position on the couch, or if the phone bounces in your pocket while walking, the screen will constantly turn on, draining your battery and occasionally triggering accidental button presses (like turning on the flashlight in your pocket). To save battery, you must disable this accelerometer hook.

How to Turn Off Raise to Wake

You can permanently lock the screen state via the Display settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Display & Brightness.
  3. Scroll down to the middle of the menu.
  4. Locate the toggle switch labeled Raise to Wake.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Absolute Screen Control

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely sever the connection between the physical motion sensors and the display engine. You can now aggressively shake the phone, flip it over, or jog with it in your pocket, and the screen will remain completely, utterly black. The only way to wake the screen is to intentionally tap the glass or press the physical power button, guaranteeing absolute manual control over your display battery usage.
