The Battery Drainer
Newer Apple Watch models feature an “Always-On Display.” When you lower your wrist, the screen does not turn completely black. Instead, it subtly dims and lowers its refresh rate, allowing you to passively read the time without physically interacting with the device. While this mimics a traditional mechanical watch, powering millions of pixels every second of the day is the single largest drain on the internal battery. Furthermore, it allows anyone sitting near you to casually read your watch face complications. To double your battery life and maximize your physical privacy, you must completely kill the screen when it is not in use.
How to Turn Off the Always-On Display
You can permanently disable the passive screen rendering via the Display settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Display & Brightness.
- Scroll down and tap on Always On.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled Always On at the very top of the screen.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
A Black Screen
The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will immediately revert to its legacy behavior. The moment you lower your wrist or look away, the OLED screen will physically cut all power to its pixels, turning completely, absolutely black. The display will only ignite and render information when you intentionally raise your wrist or tap the glass, guaranteeing maximum battery conservation and total privacy from wandering eyes.
