How to Disable the Handoff Feature on Apple Watch

The Multi-Device Distraction

Apple devices are designed to seamlessly communicate with each other via a feature called “Handoff.” If you open an email or a text message on your Apple Watch, a small icon instantly appears on the dock of your nearby Mac or the multitasking screen of your iPhone, allowing you to instantly “hand off” the task to the larger screen. While this sounds convenient, the Apple Watch is constantly broadcasting its current state via Bluetooth to your other devices. If you prefer your devices to act as completely independent tools rather than a linked ecosystem, you must disable this constant broadcasting.

How to Turn Off the Handoff Feature

You can permanently isolate your watch from your Mac and iPhone via the General settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on General.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Handoff.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Enable Handoff.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

A Standalone Wearable

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background Bluetooth daemon responsible for constantly transmitting your app state. If you are reading a message on your wrist, your Mac dock will remain completely clean and silent. Your watch will now function as a completely isolated, standalone piece of hardware, ensuring your workflows remain physically separated across your devices.
