How to Disable Recent Items in the Windows 11 Start Menu

The Privacy Leak

When you click the Start button in Windows 11, the bottom half of the menu is dedicated to a massive “Recommended” section. By default, Windows aggressively populates this area with a history of your “Recent items”—the documents, spreadsheets, and photographs you opened most recently. Furthermore, if you right-click an icon on your Taskbar, Windows displays a “Jump List” of recently opened files for that specific application. If you share your computer or frequently project your screen during business meetings, broadcasting your recent file history is a massive privacy violation. You must force the operating system to stop logging your document access.

How to Turn Off Recent Items History

You can permanently sever the background tracking engine via the Personalization settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Personalization.
  3. In the main window, scroll down and click on Start.
  4. Locate the toggle switch labeled “Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer.”
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position.

A Clean Menu

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background service responsible for tracking which files you click. The “Recommended” section of your Start menu will instantly wipe its history, and all application Jump Lists on your Taskbar will be permanently emptied. You can now confidently open sensitive documents knowing that Windows will never again broadcast a shortcut to them on your primary desktop menus.
