The Unwanted File Transfer
AirDrop is an incredibly fast, proprietary Apple protocol used to beam photos and documents between iOS devices. However, if you accidentally leave your AirDrop receiver set to “Everyone,” your iPhone essentially becomes an open inbox for anyone within a 30-foot Bluetooth radius. This is frequently abused in crowded public spaces (like subways or airports) to send unsolicited, inappropriate photographs directly to strangers’ locked screens. To secure your device against digital harassment, you must permanently lock down the AirDrop receiving antenna.
How to Turn Off AirDrop Globally
You can permanently sever your device from the local file-sharing network via the General settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on General.
- Tap on AirDrop.
- You will see three options: “Receiving Off,” “Contacts Only,” and “Everyone for 10 Minutes.”
- Tap on Receiving Off to completely disable the feature.
An Invisible Device
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background Bluetooth and Wi-Fi Direct listeners associated with AirDrop. Your phone will instantly vanish from the radar of every other Apple device in the vicinity. Strangers (and even your friends) will be completely unable to beam files to your phone. If you ever need to receive a file, you must intentionally return to this menu and temporarily switch the setting back to “Contacts Only.”
