The Glowing Distraction
By default, the Apple Watch relies on its internal accelerometer to determine when you want to look at the screen. Every single time you lift your arm or twist your wrist, the watch violently powers on the bright OLED display. While convenient for checking the time, it becomes incredibly distracting when you are driving, typing on a keyboard, or simply moving your hands while talking. The screen constantly flashes on and off, wasting massive amounts of battery power and distracting people around you. You must force the watch to ignore your physical arm movements.
How to Turn Off Wake on Wrist Raise
You can permanently disconnect the accelerometer from the screen’s power switch via the Display settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Display & Brightness.
- Scroll down to the section labeled “Wake.”
- Locate the toggle switch labeled Wake on Wrist Raise.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Absolute Manual Control
The change takes effect instantly. The Apple Watch will completely sever the connection between your physical arm movements and the screen illumination. You can now swing your arms, type violently, or drive your car without the watch face ever accidentally lighting up. To check the time or view a notification, you must now explicitly and intentionally tap the glass screen with your finger or press the physical Digital Crown on the side of the device.
