How to Disable Google Translate Prompts in Chrome

The Translation Interruption

Google Chrome features a powerful, integrated translation engine. By default, whenever you navigate to a website that is written in a language different from your operating system’s primary language, Chrome will intercept the page load. It will instantly drop a pop-up window down from the address bar offering to translate the entire page into your native language. While this is incredibly useful for monolingual users, it is highly irritating for users who are fluent in multiple languages. If you frequently read foreign news sites or study different languages, this constant pop-up is a severe workflow interruption. You must disable the automatic detection trigger.

How to Turn Off Google Translate Prompts

You can permanently mute the translation engine via the Language settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Languages.
  4. Scroll down to the “Google Translate” section.
  5. Locate the toggle switch labeled “Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read” (or “Use Google Translate”).
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position.

Native Browsing

The change is instantaneous. Google Chrome will completely sever the language detection algorithm from the pop-up engine. When you visit a foreign website, the page will load natively in its original language with zero interruptions. If you ever do encounter a page you cannot read, you can still right-click anywhere on the text and manually select “Translate to [Language]” to trigger the engine on demand.
