The Formatting Engine
The iPhone keyboard is designed to format your text according to standard grammatical rules. By default, the Auto-Capitalization engine constantly monitors your punctuation. Every time you type a period, press “Return” to start a new line, or begin a brand-new text message, the keyboard will automatically capitalize the very first letter you type. While this ensures emails look professional, it is often frustrating for users who prefer a casual, all-lowercase aesthetic for social media, or developers who frequently type case-sensitive code snippets on their phones. If you want manual control over the shift key, you must disable the formatting engine.
How to Turn Off Auto-Capitalization
You can force the keyboard to respect your exact capitalization via the General settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on General.
- Scroll down and tap on Keyboard.
- Under the “All Keyboards” section, locate the toggle switch labeled Auto-Capitalization.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
A Manual Shift Key
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely sever the automatic formatting engine from the keyboard. When you start a new sentence or open a new text message, the keyboard will remain in lowercase mode. To type a capital letter, you must now explicitly tap the Shift key (the upward arrow icon), ensuring your text formatting is always exactly what you intended.
